Looking to pick up a 3-band knot from Shavemac. Curious what the difference between the Silvertip and Silvertip DO1 three band knot are. Thanks for the input!

Silvertip: very fine soft tipped hair tied in a medium dense knot. Excellent knots!
D01: stronger hair in  densely packed knots. Not as soft tipped.
I prefer the first but the D01 has many fans.

So it seems that they have similar characteristics to their 2- band counterparts then.

Yes, Nathan, although, IMO, the D-01 3-Band does not have the lengthy break in period of its 2-Band equivalent. I'm sure Claus will chime in, but there are many that consider the D-01 3-Band to be Shavemac's best knot.

Haven't tried Shavemac's 3-band silvertip, because I have Thater 3-band and figure they would be very similar. But the D01 3-band is a great knot for me. Soft but not too soft. A bit of scrub and solid density. Not as crazy dense as Rooney 'Extra Dense', and not as dense as the D01 2-band. But dense enough to have solid backbone. I actually have one on order right now. Actually, they accidentally sent me a D01 2-band instead of the 3-band. Some may have kept the 2-band, but I like the 3-band better, so I'm waiting for the re-ship. No problem getting the situation resolved.

It was only about a week. Quite fast for a custom order.

D01 three band is considerably more dense than the silvertip and typically is set a lot higher. The hairs overall diameter I believe to be greater based on performance presenting a firm backbone while maintaining soft tips. I must admit though the D01 knot I had back in 2012? I believe was absolutely stellar. Snow White tips , silky high loft with backbone , pure luxury.

On the shavemac website there is a description of their various knots and comparisons.  It can be found in the Product Advisor under Badger Qualities.

As with all hair, you can get some variations. I bought a huge Shavemac silvertip back a few years back, and it was nothing like the original silvertip that I had. The original was soft and unique. Slightly approaching recent synthetic softness, but still maintaining that distinct badger feel. The large shavemac I have now isn't as silky soft as that knot was.

German's take on the two is how I would describe it to. The 3-band D01 has a feel similar to Rooney Heritage back in the day. Not as dense, but a similar feeling.

I would say I overall prefer the 3-band D01 just a bit more. I enjoyed Rooney 3-band Heritage, and the slightly less density was just right for me.

I know you asked for three band recommendations, but Bernd also offers a 2-band "unique" density knot that is very soft, has good (but not overpowering backbone), and excellent flow-through. I have a couple of these in 26x52 bulb configuration, and they are wonderful.

D01 3-band is more dense and solid in feel. Not scratchy but if set too low, you will need a couple of dozens or so uses to break it in.

Regular 3-band is close to the Savile Row knot in feel (Shavemac makes the SR knot). Soft and gentle not so dense a knot with great flow through.

I like both knots. Thäter 3-band feels very much like a Shavemac 3-band regular knot (not saying they are the same, but they feel quite much alike in feel)
