Everyone talks about how many shaves they can get out of a blade, but, here is the thing:  different men do different numbers of passes per shave.  So, if one man does four passes per shave, he would get, predictably, half as many shaves per blade as another man, doing only two passes.

So, how many passes per blade is usual?

ETA:  Also, which brands?  I am sure each variety has its own specifics.

'Passes' is probably a better measure than 'shaves'. I would say 9-12 passes for most blades.

When using DEs, I use Feathers, and get 2 excellent 4-pass plus touch up shaves per blade.

I use Feather Pros and get 6-8 passes or 2-3 shaves per blade.

Artist's Club blades, KAI Milds or Feather Pros. I get around 35 passes.

I've pushed my Polsilver SI and Gillette Nacets to 6 shaves, or 18 passes. Typically, though, I change a blade after two shaves.

Wow guys, I've used various DE blades for at least 5, 2-3 pass shaves for many years.

Pretty well the same for me.  At least 3 passes per shave for three shaves.

I'm with Billy....
I change blades every Monday and get 5-7 2-1/2 pass shaves each week. My technique has improved so that I consistently get a DFS all week from the premium blades like Kai, Feather, and Merkur.
I'm working my way through a Sample Pack and have found a few that only last 2 - 3 shaves.

Yeah I usually put in a new blade once a week but sometimes have gone 2-3 weeks without changing blades. I shave 6-7 times per week, 3 passes each shave.

I don't think it's the number of passes that really dulls the blades but the exposure to moisture:

So it really is about the number of "shaves" more than the number of passes.

I'm a believer in that as well...I'm pretty OCD about rinsing, patting (not rubbing) dry and storing my blade in a location away from the sink.

I have a question here Gents.. Same blade in a Shavette last for 2 days Max but on DE a week. Why should that happen?

It could just be the different ways in which the blade is used.  When its used in a shavette, its less "secured" (for lack of a better word) and more exposed, but in a DE, its more rigid and has a higher tolerance.  A duller blade in a DE is more tolerable than in a shavette, sort of how the safest kitchen knife is the sharpest one.

GSB's give me five to six 4-pass shaves = 20-24 passes total.
Feather pro's/pro-supers give me ten to twelve 4-pass shaves = 40-48 passes total.

Passes are a big part of it, but beard density and coarseness weighs in too.  My beard is slightly denser but also slightly softer than average, I always do three passes and get 14 to 30 + shaves a blade, depending on which blade Im using. Of course I should mention I only use vintage blades.

Holy Hannah! That article makes so much sense. May also partially explain why I, who rinses & strop after every shave, seem to get more shaves . . . that and my superior technique of course! ?

I see so many guys get multiple shaves out of a blade... I use feathers and because of my course whisker.  I'm one & done! Anybody else here only use a blade one?
