I do this.

Does anyone else?

I tend to lather in a shaving mug, for the soap, for the first pass, or, two.  Then, I use the cream, but, I hand & face lather the cream.  I use the brush to build the lather, in my hand, and, then, apply to my face, with the hand.  This is usually the second, but, sometimes, the third pass.

For the touch-up, and, detailing pass/passes, I apply the cream lather, with the brush,

Brush on for every pass works best for me.

I just face lather for the entire shave, which is usually three passes and perhaps a touch up.

I face lather the whole way.  However, I usually thin the lather on the 2nd/3rd pass, after mowing down most of the stubble.

Circular strokes to apply lather to face then paint strokes to perfect lather. Only paint strokes for second and touch up pass.Thicker, but still runny lather on first pass. Second pass lather is wetter and runnier. Touch up pass is extra runny and messy.

Yes, I do almost the same. I end up with a lot of water in the lather.

Face lather entire time

Circular mostly on 1st pass, painting to hydrate the lather. Primarily painting on 2nd and cleanup

I'll start whipping my lather in the scuttle to warm everything up. Then it's face lather overpass.  Pass 2 & 3 a little thinner.

I just play with my lather till it looks shave-able. I don't really have a specific way.
