For me, the best pre-shave is a proper prep with a lot of hot water.  It eliminates the need for a pre-shave product.

This. Shaving right after a hot shower works well for me. Then I hop back in to rinse off after I'm done. Easier than hunting down that bit of lather behind the ears.

I have used Proraso pre shave lotion and Saponificio Varesino pre shave oil in the past with success. Lately I have been rubbing in some excess lather with my hands and rinsing it out before lathering with the brush.

Like many before me, I simply shower before the shave - and I use a glycerine soap on my face. This type of soap contains humectants, which helps to keep my face & whiskers hydrated longer. The key to a great shave IMHO is taking the time to create an excellent lather.

I've never found using a pre-shave oil or a pre-shave soap to make any difference. However, a friend recently recommended Castle Forbes Pre Shave, which is water soluble, and I think it's terrific. I have soaps that I enjoy in every aspect except that they aren't slick enough when using a straight, which I'm now able to use because of this product.

This is a great thread. I used to use oil but I now do not. I will rub excess soap from my puck directly on my sensitive areas before I lather.

I usually just wipe some of the soap on my face to work while I'm preparing my lather.

But the green Proraso above is great to give you a menthol kick, even if your soap is not mentholated.  It's the only pre-shave I ever tried.

Hot shower, clean face with a good bar soap usually Stirling or Yardley and then Myrsol Antisol a few minutes before the shave.

If I use Mystic Water soap I usually bloom it so I will use the bloom water on those days

Proraso or 3P (3P being my preferred choice)...apply then apply a hot towel, wipe and lather.

Well, my pre-shave ritual, rightly speaking, starts in the shower.  I shampoo, and, condition, my beard/stubble.  Next, I dry off, by patting, and, massaging, my face.  Then, I use Suave Lotion. Following this, I wash my face with Clearasil Face Wash. After that, comes the Proraso Pre-Shave Cream.  This really works wonders.    Then, finally, I shave.  But, I use a brush, and, the final part of my lather building is on my  face.

Shower and wash my face with a good bar soap. Rub Myrsol Emulsion into my beard and lather straight over.

Been trying a pre-shave oil this week and haven't found any improvements in my shave at all. Thinking the pre-shave is a marketing gimmick and hot water is all you need.

I have tried the AOS pre shave oils. I decided after a couple of uses that they are entirely too thick and sticky with no shave quality improvement. I received a tube of Simpsons pre shave with a brush order. The Simpsons oil was thinner and much easier to apply but also didn't show any signs of an improved experience for me. I actually became frustrated due to the extra work required to rinse the oil/lather combination from my razor. I have also tried using Nivea balm as a pre shave. While Nivea is a post shave product I thoroughly enjoy at times, it still didn't prove to be advantageous to use as a pre shave. Echoing many others here, a hot shower and proper lather with a quality soap is sufficient for me.

Don't use them much but I remember I had a great shave when I used a Proraso pre. It helps but I find that I can forego this with really good and slick soaps.

If and when I shave daily, a good pre-shave does make a difference.
I use these now:

Summer
Myrsol Antesol
Geo F. Trumper Skin Food (I own all 3)

Winter:
Castle Forbes Pre-Shave
Myrsol Emulsion
