Like others in this thread, I usually use a basic glycerine soap as a pre-shave, mostly to hydrate and soften the whiskers and then I leave it on before applying lather which may give a marginal "uberlather." Seems to help and is cheap. My GF recently got me some of the Proraso pre-shave cream and it does seem to work well the few times I've tried it. In both cases I think the benefit is a bit extra residual slickness from the glycerin. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not a fan of pre-shave oil but I do experience a positive difference with a mentholated cream like Myrsol Emulsion or Proraso Pre/Post.

I use these now:
Summer
Myrsol Antesol
Geo F. Trumper Skin Food (I own all 3)
Winter:
Castle Forbes Pre-Shave
Myrsol Emulsion
Do you notice the alcohol from the Myrosl Antesol drying out your brush, or anything in the Myrsol Emulsion gunking up your brush? I've been interested in trying both of these, do you think one or the other performs any better?

I haven’t noticed any such thing.
I think they perform on par with each other.

Have extremely sensitive skin and copper wire patchy beard. Hot shower, condition face, keep wet, use preshave and top notch soaps (ABC AdP, CF, now Grooming Dept and Wholly Kaw DM). Preshave is mandatory or a bad day is had. Proraso sensitive skin worked then went to Equate Noxema knock off saving significantly if slightly less pleasant scent. Follow up Alum, WH, AS splash and AS Balm.

I tried a bunch of pre-shaves, including Proraso, Trumper's Skin Food, Village Barber, and a bunch of others I can't recall, before landing on Myrsol Emulsion. When I ran out after a couple of years, I switched to Alt Innsbruck, but it's not quite the same. I don't even use it, or any other pre-shave, anymore. I think I need to order some more Emulsion...

I seldom get to shave after I shower, so I wash my face with Noxzema cream- actually, I use the Equate knock-off from Walmart. Noxzema changed their formula a few years ago, while the knock off still has camphor and other goodies. And I love that classic Noxzema smell. I rinse most of it off, then I take my time building lather on my face.
Sometimes if I'm using a stick I forego the faux Noxzema and rub the stick on briefly, wet my hands, and scrub my face. Then I rinse a bit of it off, hit my puss with the soap stick again, and when the brush hits it the lather explodes!

i have tried and finished about 10 different preshave products.
the only one i have rebought was proraso white.
i still have about 3 more to try (once my half finished proraso white tub is finished).
i dont really think any of the preshave products add anything spectacular to the quality of the shave...i pretty much use them because i buy them to take me to free shipping levels from online vendors.
