Zac, that question might be too complicated to answer, nowadays, as there are so many variants of 2-Band. For example, Shavemac's D-01 2-Band and Simpsons' Manchurian hairs are clearly 2-Band Silvertip, but they differ, significantly, from the ubiquitous 2-Band Silvertip knots you find and even from each other.
Nonetheless, your idea of the standard 2-Band hair might be correct as a general observation.

2-band is really also a 3-band, but the mid band is wider, than in regular 3-bands. You sometimes see 2-bands, where you can actually see the beginning of the third band, where the knot enters into the handle.

The 2-band hair is also thicker, because badgers with the 2 (really 3) band hair lives in the colder areas and mountains, so the hair is thicker to protect against the colder climate.

A great 2-band has soft tips, yet a lot of backbone.

I don't have enough time in the saddle to make a fully informed decision...   Great read though!

I had a Morris & Forndran 2XL 3 band hybrid, circa 2013 once upon a time. A face-latherer's dream for sure. Fantastic knot

Personally I don't have any pure or finest brushes anymore. But I like 2 and 3 Band options, HMW, Manchurian, etc all equally and I like fans and bulbs about equally. I just like a really well made and luxurious brush and which one I reach for is based on how I feel that day.

Usually the silverstip is associated with floppy performance issues some of the 2 band ones perform and feel similar to finest badger knot quality. Very strange.

True. My Thater 2 band actually shows quite a bit of the third band (especially in photos taken with a flash) perhaps due to its relatively high loft. To confuse matters, my Elite Manchurian White is actually also 2 band hair. It has a lower loft than the Thater and doesn't show any of the third band. Both are outstanding brushes, probably my one and two. So I guess I vote for 2 band, because it is hard to choose between those two. Very close to those two would be my Shavemac D01 Silvertip (three band) set in a LoveYourShave handle with a pretty low 52mm loft (low for a 28mm knot)...aaaand my Chubby 2 Best Badger is a damn fine three band. I don't know if I can vote, Mike. I guess gun to my head I'm keeping the Thater or the Elite, so 2 band fan for me.
