I just use regular bath soap.  It's usually an artisan bath soap, but the soap I use on my face prior to shaving has no effect on the quality of the shave.

I've tried a variety of soaps that supposedly improve the shave by softening the whiskers or keeping the skin moist, but I've not found them to be any more effective than my bath soap, usually Mike's or Mystic Water.

I've been using cetaphil facial daily cleanser for roughly a year now. I put some on my face/neck and use a loofah to scrub it in. The glycerin in it might make my lather slicker, but I have noticed that my shaves are closer to BBS when I use it.

I use this stuff... seems to lock in moisture better than others I've tried.

In the shower before I shave in the morning, I first rinse off my face then apply a few drops of hair conditioner (Andalou Argan Oil conditioner these days) to my beard area before soaping up for the rest of my shower.  I rinse both my body and my face before exiting the shower.  Once outside the shower, and before shaving, I apply the thinnest possible layer of Noxzema Classic Clean Original deep cleansing cream to my beard area, which I do not rinse off; I apply the shaving soap lather right over it.

Works a treat.

I use Musgo Real Glyce Claus Porto Classic Scent Oil Soap or Whole Foods 365 Vegetable Glycerin Soap before most every shave.

None at all!  Want to keep your skins natural oils intact to help the razor glide smoothly.  Few splashes of cold water to moisturize everything and ready for lather!

I have found I get best results by using Noxzema (original during Summer, moisturizing during Winter) as a pre-shave facial cleanser.  I too have tried several "pre-shave soaps" and am working through a bar of RazoRock Thermal Mud soap, even though it wasn't expressly made for that purpose, which is good but Noxzema really seems to work the best for me.  For what it's worth, I shower in the evening and shave in the morning so a pre-shave wash is necessary to get my whiskers ready to be whacked.

Bar soap can close the pores. So, I was using Clearasil Daily Face Wash, but, now I use it after my shave.  I always shower, before shaving, though, and, I wash my face, thoroughly, with a wash cloth, while showering.  ETA: Also, while in the shower, I shampoo, &, condition, the beard, several times.  Then, after the shower, I use Suave Lotion, on my hair, face, &, body.  Then, when it is time to shave, I simply add some water, and, pre-shave cream, and, start the process.

If I shower first that suffices. If no shower, just a shave, then it's a cold water wash with whatever soap my wife puts out. I spend so much time face lathering I figure I'm pretty clean before the blade hits my face. It never occurred to me to try anything else.

I prefer dermalogica daily face scrub before my shaves. Super stuff. Helps in exfoliation and softens the beard too.

Either one.  However, I do prefer the bar from Whole Foods and it is only $1.99.

It is now.  Andalou reformulated its entire line this year.  The former Argan Oil & Sweet Orange conditioner in a green translucent bottle was replaced by the current Argan Oil & Shea Butter conditioner in an opaque white bottle.

I just use the charcoal face soap I make. I would have used it regardless and don't necessarily consider it a pre shave soap per se. I don't think it works any better than a hot towel or any other pre shave soap.

I sometimes use a bar soap to wash my face but steer away from something that is too drying.

I am curious though, if you face lather with a brush, is there really a reason to clean the areas on your face that you plan to shave before you shave as well? I started focusing a bit less on the products when I realized I am face lathering normally for about 2-3min and giving plenty of water anyways.
