I have ordered some menthol crystals from Amazon to jazz up a couple of my old shaving soaps that have lost their fragrances over the years.  Those of you with experience, please give me some guidance about how to dissolve the crystals (alcohol? witch hazel? water?) for this purpose.  The online image shows a foil packet, and I'm not sure if the crystals are discrete chunks or sort of shredded.
Thanks!

It will dissolve into a minimum of 1:1 ratio of 95% ethanol. IIRC it will also dissolve into a 1:1 ratio of any carrier oil. Dilute it to 1:2 crystal:whatever and it should dissolve.

Personally I'd go for a 1:3 ratio or 25% concentration of menthol in carrier. Then use a dropper or pipette each use. Or grate up the soap and get a final concentration of soap to menthol of .25-1%.

It's crystals John.

They're very strong. Go slow.

I usually drop a little into a bottle of aftershave and shake it every day. The longest I've seen it take to dissolve was three days.

I dissolved a few in a cup under running hot tap water the day I got mine. Big mistake. Like a menthol bomb. The dogs also didn't like that.

I've used menthol crystals to mentholate after shaves but never soap.  I like Lee's advice of adding a small amount of dissolved crystals before each shave.  And like Todd said, go slow.  It's easy to over do the menthol and that's not any fun at all.

John,
This is a link to the method I used, which I found to be very successful: http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/th...ect.45842/
As has been said, better to error on less crystals than more...

This is very interesting.  I've never cared one way or the other about a product being mentholated but I  love to tinker,  or as my mother used to say, doctor things up. I'm going to pay attention to this thread.

If you haven't already purchased the crystals, I'd recommend getting either pre-diluted menthol in alcohol/oil or peppermint essential oil. It's worth the price to avoid the hassle of dissolving and measuring it yourself unless you already have the grain alcohol & a micro gram scale on hand already.

I've already ordered the crystals, so I guess it's going to be seat of the pants operation.

For as much as I love menthol I would get "cold feet" about using menthol crystals in any shaving soap, cream, or aftershave.

One option is to buy 444 balm.

It's pretty much just glycerine gel with menthol. Good stuff. Not too strong or too wimpy.

Menthol dissolves readily into alcohol or carrier oils.  You can also dissolve it into water (melting point about 111F).  I like Lee's method.  I would use a larger container though and keep adding menthol crystals until you reach your desired strength.  You can get amber bottles with droppers easily in some independent pharmacies and stores.

John, I am interested in your results. I also ordered some crystals from Amazon about the same time that you did. How's it coming?

Whatever method you use just make sure the product has alcohol already implemented in the ingredients. I just place a few crystals on a metal utensil and use a heat source under it until the crystals melt into liquid form and then apply it to the creams, facewashes, bodywashes, shampoos etc. Invigorating results every time.

I used the crystals for the first time this morning.  I dissolved about 1/8 tsp of them in 1-1/2 tsp of very hot water and then pipetted that mix into my lather as I built it in my scuttle bowl.  The lather was quite cold on my skin, and I liked it.  I think I got the ratio perfect for me with the first try.  I certainly would not want to use the menthol every day, but once every couple weeks will be fine.
