I'm in the "both" column.

Splash with alcohol in it (usually) for antiseptic properties, and that glorious burn (hotter the better)...

...and balm to return moisture and soothe (or, put the fire out, depending on how you look at it...)

Witch hazel before either.

Great results so far.

Usually I like to use both. A good alcohol splash like Stirlings, then a good balm again like Stirling or unrefined Shea Butter, they really do a great job. I also tried Thayers Witch Hazel toner and I find it also to be a great product !

Happy Shaving !

I prefer splashes. Love the cool hit it provides. I find balms too greasy feeling. Although i dont like the feeling of creams in general (even hand creams)

Splash. Tend to look for some with a bit more glycerin.

Splash - I just don't like the balm face-feel nearly as much

Now:

Splash first, then balm

If it’s an unusual hot summer, I only apply the splash.

Depens, I can combine both but I always use a splash before, then I may apply some balm while the lotion is still being absorved, a tiny bit of it. During summertime I skip the balm every now and then, particularly when the soap used has good post shave qualities.

Balm then splash. Why in that order? Years past I read an article on this topic (by a derm doc) and he recommended heavy then lite.  Of course I suspect other doc's may have it the other way.  But works for me...

I start with alum.  Rinse it off and then put some witch hazel on with a cotton ball, and leave it on.  In the summer I follow with just a splash of aftershave.  In the winter I will use a balm and then splash with some aftershave.
