I've used and enjoyed several Edwin Jagger DE 89 series razors for years, but am curious what reasonably priced upgrades might improve my shaving experience. Please share some suggestions that you think I should consider. Thanks!

If you want to start on the cheap get a V3a head from Maggards. I think it is an "upgrade" in aggressiveness from the 89.
It would give you a feel for which direction you might want to go.

I agree with all of the Rockwell votes as well.

I concur with the gentlemen recommending the Rockwell 6S.

Performance, flexibility, and value, especially in a box with a stand, all stainless...hard to beat.

I think I paid 125 clams for the whole kit and kaboodle.

Sweet gear, sir.

Rockwell 6C
Maggard V3 (Or V3A)
Vintage Gillette Old Type

These would be my choice as a starting point of stepping up from a EJ89 if you don't want to spend a bunch of money. I actually just picked up a Rockwell 6C for $30 here on the BST forum. I own all 3 of these and they shave great

If money is no object then you have so many options .. Blackbird, Charcoal Goods, Paradigm, Wolfman, ATT, Timeless etc etc

I've seen some good deals on the BST on Above The Tie razors lately.  They don't get much love anymore because of all the new razors, but they're hard to beat.

Here's my two cents. If you're thinking DE, and want to buy modern, look at the Asylum Evolution. For vintage, either a Red Tip or pre-war Tech. If you want to explore SE, look at a Schick injector. They're all excellent, reasonably priced shavers.

So I just went through this same thought process and in the end purchased a Karve CB razor. The CB is a beautiful all-brass razor that ships directly from the manufacturer in Canada. I purchased both the B and C plates. I’ve been using the B plate exclusively and couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend!

Not yet. Most Likely the end of March. Wait for it.

Thanks to all who have replied to my question and have provided food for thought. In terms of style/appearance, I like the classic looks of the EJ 89 series and would prefer to find a performance upgrade with a similar look.

if you want similar looks with an upgrade then RR MJ90 is the way to go and it comes with 2 plates, currently on sale for $30
