Today - March 4th - marks the 100th anniversary of the Spanish Flu, with the first known case observed at Fort Riley, Kansas.

A pretty horrifying pandemic, killing more people than the Great War.

Really curious the name given, happened when we had free press in Spain, nothing to do with today's reality

According to Wikipedia the name comes from the fact that papers in the UK, US, France, Austria-Hungary and Germany were censured due to the war, while Spanish papers were free to report on the flue; thus creating a false impression that neutral Spain was particularly hard hit.

In Spain, a different nickname was adopted, the Naples Soldier (Soldado de Nápoles), which came from a musical operetta titled "La canción del olvido", which premiered during the first epidemic wave. It was quipped that the play's most popular musical number, Naples Soldier, was as catchy as the flu.

A nice bit of gallows humour there Smile

Yes, in Spain there were free press and they can speak about all this, meanwhile in the rest of the other countries was censured by the war.

What I say is 100 years ago in Spain we had papers that could speak about everything, nothing to do with today

Smile

Hans, you seem to have a hugely inquisitive nature that is quenched only by voracious research and reading. Your professors must have been quite impressed with your efforts.

My grandfather died 20 October 1918 from the Spanish Flu. He was just 31 and had returned from 4 years on the Western Front earlier that year. What a shame.
