This is a great looking brush. Congratulations to the members who were fortunate to purchase one! That’s a drag about the decals. Maybe the brushes were polished to a high gloss and the polishing compound interfered with the decals’ adhesion.

A satisfied BullGoose customer's report on obtaining and initial use of the Semogue SN 2018 LE Two-Band Badger shaving brush:

1. Purchase and delivery:

On Tuesday March 20th email notice of the 2018 LE's availability arrived at 07:47 PDT.

Being a Semogue fanboy the decision to purchase had been made weeks earlier so an order was promptly placed.

Email confirmation arrived from BullGoose at 08:02 PDT.

The brush was dispatched with typical BullGoose efficiency via USPS less than 6 1/2 hours after order confirmation.

Less than 72 hours elapsed before my new Semogue LE was available for retrieval from the P.O. box nearest my Undisclosed Secure Location in a remote town where the altitude is four-times higher than the population.

2. Preparation and first use:

On Friday afternoon and evening the new brush was soaked a few hours, rinsed and tips were towel dried several times.

Following another short soak in hotish tap water, by 06:45 Saturday the Semogue SN 2018 LE (25/100) was producing copious bowl lather with minimal badger funk from my beloved, semi-hard Abbate Y la Mantia Krokos.

Soon three smoothly and softly applied latherings with the Semogue followed by light-handed passes with my Asylum RX/Feather Pro-Guard combination produced a near-epic BBS shave.

This is only an initial use, of course, but it is quite encouraging.

3. Comparison to other Semogue 2-bands:

I also own, use and enjoy two other Semogue two-band badger brushes: the SOC with cherry wood handle and the Foro Afeitado 2016 LE.

Listed specifications for the three in this order - The Shave Nook 2018 SE/Foro Afeitado 2016 SE/Semogue Owner's Club - are:

Knot Material: 2-Band Finest Badger/2-Band Finest Badger/ 2-Band Super Badger

Knot Loft (approx):  51  / 50 / 53

Handle Height (approx): 53 / 50 / 57

Overall Height (approx): 104  / 100  / 110

Knot Diameter (approx): 25 / 25 / 23 - visually my FA 2016 LE appears a bit wider than the SN 2018 LE.

Loft / Knot Ratio: 2.0 / 2.0 / 2.3

4. Notes:
  • All have semi-bulb shaped knots.
  • The badger hair used in the SN 2018 SE is very close to that of the FA 2016 SE (FA), with the SN 2018 LE (SN) having slightly lighter colored tips.  The SN has very soft tips with middle of the road density and backbone, which is an excellent combination IMO.  Both are very soft with the FA exhibiting slightly more backbone based on the "push test".  SN and SOC have similar backbone; the SN has much softer tips and slightly more density.
  • The FA's knot is a bit denser than the SN's; SOC is least dense.
  • The SN's knot is both taller and wider than the FA's while being shorter but much wider than the SOC's.
  • The SN's fit and finish are- to my standards - flawless.  My FA is also well finished although several handle QA problems were reported by disappointed buyers on the Spanish-language Foro Afeitado site after the very late 2016 deliveries.  I love the finish of the SOC and keep the wood oiled and polished.
  • The SN's handle length is about midway between that of the FA and SOC.  The SN's handle diameter is noticeably narrower than either of the other Semogues.  Based on my experience this morning the SN 2018 LE has near perfect handle and overall length dimensions for bowl lathering which I do a lot.
  • The FA is just about my favorite face lathering brush but the relatively short and wide handle is problematic IMO.
  • Regarding reported issues durability of the Semogue brand decal 1) FWIW the same decal on my FA 2016 LE is still in good shape after 15 months of frequent use and 2) a Foro Afeitado poster suggested covering the decal with a thinned layer of  clear marine varnish; he said is is invisible and has protected his Semogue decals for years.
IMO BullGoose and Semogue have provided quick reacting Smile  Shave Nook members with a superb two-band badger brush at a fair price.  It's especially suitable for bowl lathering.  Thanks to all who made this brush available.

Mazama, I cannot think of a better review for both product and supplier.

Every time I see these pictures I'm struck by how nice this particular tortoise material is.

#48 just got home today Wink . I won't be posting pics of it due to the poor lighting of my bathroom in the evenings . They made impossible to get a photo really worth of the brush.  I have, however, used it and I can say the brush is worth every penny. The knot had moderate backbone and very soft tips. Compared to my Druida Manchurian, it has a bit less backbone and a just a tad softer tips, making it perfect for face lathering, which will be its primary function.

Very, very happy with the purchase.

Beautiful brushes, each and every one! Thank you for sharing your photos, Gents. Like Ricardo said, the rod material is very appealing. The unique patterning in each handle is lovely to see. Reports of the knots’ inherent qualities aren’t surprising. Enjoy many happy shaves with your new acquisitions!

I want to say again how much I like this brush. The badger hair is uber-soft without sacrificing backbone. What a gorgeous handle, much more interesting than a typical tortoise shell. I feel fortunate to have been one of the 100 to have secured one. A fine addition to the TSN LE family.  Thumbup

The Semogue TSN LE brush is an awesome brush. As previously noted, the brush is not dense but the hair is really soft (with medium backbone). Super enjoyable scrub with an elegant handle, great job all on this project!
