Back in the day the words "electricity" and "magnetism" carried much the same meaning as "quantum" do today; something modern and futuristic. So when A L Silberstein's firm came up with a straight razor in 1905 or thereabout which was tempered using electrical heat instead of gas or coal... off course they were going to slap a modern name of it. Say hello to the Carbo-Magnetic Razor!

I also found a few modern photos of the Carbo-Magnetic Razor; the etching on the blade is quite stunning.

You find the most interesting items!

"no annual tax."  Like, they used to charge an annual tax on razor blades?  If so, it's no wonder so many men had beards back in those days.

My assumption is that the "tax" refers to the yearly outlay for buying supplies or new razors.

I'm guessing there were some disappointed customers.  Ginsu of the straight razor world.

In Robert Waits' book, Before Gillette -- The Search for a Safe Razor -- Inventors and Patents 1762-1901, there is an entire chapter on "Dr." George A Scott, whose company (Scott's Pall Mall Electric Association) sold a range of supposedly magnetic and electrical medical products and razors in the last 15 years of the 19th Century.  The book has lots of cool pictures of electrically-charged (not electrically operated) razors and patent info.  If you are interested in this topic, I highly recommend the Waits book.  As Hans points out in his original post, people were enthralled by electricity at the time, and charlatans stepped in to take advantage.
