That is some very interesting information that I did not know; thank you for sharing it.  I have an AS D2, and have occasionally wished for an open comb version of it.  I checked and saw that Maggard's the Ikon website has the base plate Mel mentioned for $40.  It's just a matter of time till I pick one up.

Thank you for the recommendations all. I'll be buying a Timeless razor sometime soon to see how that goes, and I'll keep an eye out on the Game Changer as well. I happened to receive a Blackbird Polished head and a Weber PH razor in a trade and have been enjoying my time with those. They might be what I'm looking for, but only time will tell. Might be one of the two I have now, and it might be one of the two I'll be getting. Either way I'll be having a good time testing them out!

I sent a message to them to see when they might have more Game Changer razors in, and the response I got back was they hoped to have more in stock in a week or so. That message was received on the 12th. So hopefully it won't be too much of a wait.

It's been awhile since I've posted, and lo and behold, I'm doing it somewhere than the brush forum!  Shok

All kidding aside, I was hoping to get some input from individuals about what could possibly be a good upgrade to a Feather ASD2. Truth be told, I'm not sure if there is much that would be an upgrade, and I'm not too inclined to go down the RAD department. SBAD has been bad enough. Wink I can use the ASD2 realistically for any time that I've shaved, and I'm just hoping to get a touch more cutting efficiency out of a new razor, but I don't really have any complaints against the ASD2. It works great. I used a Muhle R89 Grande for a long time, and when I stepped up to the ASD2, it was a clear step up for me, and just been hoping I might find a step up again possibly in the right razor.

What I am looking for in an upgrade is:

A knurled handle of some type (Can't do smooth surface razors really. Mergress was my only exception)
A razor somewhere between a Feather ASD2 and an ATT R1 (The R1 is just too aggressive for more than one pass regardless of beard growth. I found the M1 too similar and not any better.)
Typically I like a razor size of 3.5". It just doesn't feel right typically to go any larger or smaller.
One that is closed comb.
Thanks for the help and comments all!

Try using shims.  I put 2 shims between the baseplate and the blade, to very good effect.
It's cheap, easy, and you might like the results.  Try it before you go off buying another razor.

If you like the Blackbird but find it a bit too aggressive then you should check out the new Blackbird Dart that is to be released any day now. That one sounds like it meets what you are looking for. Check out the details in the Dart thread for more information on the head and what the handle looks like. At $ 99.00 bucks each for head and handle plus shipping is included, i don't think you'll be disappointed.

FWIW my pocket change piggy bank is slated for a Timeless in 0.68 one day, liking the idea and engineering in that razor.  Reviews seem to justify a trial.

Take Care

So far I've found the Timeless to be impressive. I still need more time with it. The Game Changer was tugging, but I tried a new blade instead of my usual, so I suspect it is more the blade's fault than anything.
