These are older brushes, before the  collaboration with Brad Sears, from about 2012 to early 2014.  They were entirely made by Lee Sabini. It is two band hair that is characterized by very soft tips--in many cases, gel like--and excellent backbone.

I've owned 25-30 Simpsons, mostly Manchurian and 2-band silvertips, 15 old classic M&F and several other brushes.

Some worked better than others, but either handle was too small og knot not quite to my liking.

I have ended up with 7 custom Bernd made Shavemacs and 4 4125 2-band Thäters. Thäter 4125 2-band is the best knot among the Thäters for me, because I value a quite dense and stout feeling knot.
All these are my favourites for face lathering.

I have found, that once I got past the first 5-6 years of face lathering, my preferences are now for a 2-band silvertip like knot or a low lofted quite dense 3-band silvertip knot.
If it's a fan shaped knot, loft is adjusted accordingly. If it's a bulb shaped knot, loft is also adjusted accordingly.

Thanks for you input! I will definitely look into the Thater 4125 2-band. Happy Shaving!

In no particular order;
  • Simpsons M7 Manchurian.
  • Elite Razors Manchurian badger 28mm fan (30mm at the handle) in a Wolf Whiskers handle.
  • Maggard's badger knot 26mm (28mm at the handle) in a custom Polo handle.
  • Shavemac D01 Silvertip custom 28mm fan at 54mm loft.
  • Semogue 830 red socket acrylic handle boar bristles.
  • Paladin Sherlock, Tut, and El Dorado.
  • Razorock Blondie boar knot in a restored Rubberset 200 handle.
  • Maseto knot in a taller custom handle.
  • Declaration B3 in a custom handle.
  • TGN Finest fan and bulb various sizes.
  • TGN Silvertip Grade A set with a low loft in a custom handle. Fan and bulb.
  • Simpsons Somerset best badger 59 and K4.
  • Simfix Grosvenor two band Silvertip with black handle.
  • Shavemac D01 two band in a restored butterscotch handle.
  • Omega S brush in a custom handle.
  • life2short1971 badger knots and brushes. Amazing and somewhat under the radar.
  • Maggard's badger and boar mixed knot in a custom handle.
  • Yaqi two band finest reset at a lower loft.
  • Thater bulb in a custom handle.
Then again, I almost always face lather. So far I haven't met a brush I couldn't get lather on my face with.

I prefer to face lather using brushes that have knots made with the thinner and/or 3 banded color badger hair. So it may be called silver tip or high mountain white but I guess what I prefer about it is the less dense brushes can release a lot of water into the lather for me. I have grown my collection of badgers somewhat recently without really planning on it. I think I will be downsizing soon but there may be 3 -5 brushes I am really using in my rotation.

1 and 2 Shave Revolution 24mm plug 3 Band High Mountain White Silvertip (One is more fannish and semi hybrid while another is more rounded and bulb shaped)
3 Acca Kappa 27mm Pure Silvertip 1869
4 Vie Long 25mm Silvertip
5 and 6 Plisson 19mm Pure Badger (vintage)
7 Floppy Mop Plisson Synthetic version one rocks like hell too!

There are too many great offerings to name just five, but most good 2-Band bulb-type knots in large dimensions would be my preference.
I am quite fond of Shavemac's offerings, but Maseto Shaving has some outstanding 2-Band knots that are superb, for their price as well.
Knots can have quite different feel on the face depending on so many variables.  Shy

Just got a custom Brad Sears Arley and I have to say it is in my top 2. True yellow blonde badger tips and the tips are softer than my Paladin, M&F, Elite Manchurian, Shavemac. High quality Badger hair! It feels like a high quality cotton ball.

I really like synthetics knot, so usually my goto is TGC.
About badger, I actually recommend NALS 2-band Super and Thater 3-band Silvertip.

Today ... Thäter "49125/1" Silberspitze 24x50x101mm
