For those restoring older brushes, who is providing the current quality and budget friendly source of 18-20mm boar and finest(2 band)badger knots?

I have heard TGN is hit/miss regarding their Badger, but they also offer boar.

What about the Chinese Ebay Vendors?

I think buying knots on eBay from China is like a box of chocolates.

I don’t necessarily find Badger knots from TGN to be hit or miss in terms of whether or not you are going to get a bad one, but more like talking about batches of hair from Simpson. Some are just better than others. Different scale, same principle, to me.

Envy Shave sells knots down to 19 for 2 Band and 20 for Silvertip. They are excellent knots.

Currently I think TGN is your best bet. Trusted site and nice selection of sizes. Currently have one of their 2 banded boars in my restored Rubberset 200t and have absolutely no complaints. Great little brush!

I recently acquired a Virginia Sheng 20mm finest.  It actually measured 21mm and with glue bump needed a bore of about 23-23.5mm to fit.
I'm quite happy with the knot, soft tips and reasonable backbone and mid-low to mid density.  Exceeded my expectation and great for a budget knot restore project.
