It is funny how time offers perspective. When I was growing up in the 1970's, there were a host of snack foods and/or deserts that, looking back on it, were absolutely disgusting.

Which desert or snack food do you consider to be the most disgusting?

My vote goes for either the Hostess "pies" which had sickly sweet frosting and a thick raw tasting dough but there are several close runner ups including the infamous Moon Pies.

What makes your list?

I know head cheese is not a snack but it really turns me off. Why they call it cheese I don't know but the ingredients that goes into making it is awful.

It is almost as bad as Freddy's favorite -Haggis

Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours.

Freddy swears it is delicious but I do not think I would be able to bring fork to mouth to see for myself. Confused

As far as snack food I don't know, as you mentioned it might be Moon Pies, my mother grew up on those and loved them and tried to get me to love them but they just turned my stomach. I don't like marshmallow for starters, and then there is the extreme dry/crusty texture that could choke a donkey and finally there is the fake chocolate taste.

As for "food" I'd say it would be a 3 way tie between potted meat, chicken liver (or any liver) and squirrel brains..all 3 being even more of my mothers most beloved foods. The squirrel brains I never had the pleasure of seeing for myself, she said they grew up poor in the mountains and rarely had meat and one source of meat was squirrel and they loved boiling the heads and cracking them open like walnuts and eating the brains... Scared

Cheese puffs, a good part of which ended up on my fingers rather than in my mouth.

Pork rinds. They weren't horrible tasting but I just never did enjoy them. My dad used to keep some in the house but he then realized that he was the only one eating them and he didn't even eat them that often.

I second that. There is a Hostess outlet in my town, a couple years ago I saw those in there an bought one to see if they were as "good" as I remembered...HORRIBLE and your description is spot on!

We used to eat fried spam as kids when we were growing up. I loved it then. I can hardly stand to look at it now. The flavor is ok, but the texture is like gelatinized pig parts & fat.

I love pork rinds, especially the spicy ones. Great snack for a football game.

Humph! Well see if I ever share my Haggis with you two, Phil and Johnny! Angry ( Laughing1 )

Phil, I definitely have to agree with you about those Hostess "pies." They're awful. Also, SPAM should absolutely be banned from the universe. Besides everything else, it's like opening up a salt shaker and just pouring the salt directly into your mouth.

Hawaiian Punch and Kool Aid, when it comes to snack drinks, would be two I could easily live without.
