So I am continuing my exploration of 2012 Simpson 2 band brushes with acquisition No. 6: Polo 8.
I was not sure how I would like it given the pretty sizable handle (62mm), since I face lather pretty much all the time. But to my surprise it works very well for that. As with the other 2 band brushes in this ensemble the tips are very soft (as a Thäter or Rooney 2 band), the hair has great backbone and the flow through is excellent.

With this Polo 8 I have now in rotation the following Simpson 2 band: Duke 3 (25/49mm), Emperor 3 (22/54mm), 58 (24/50mm), Tulip 3 (26/52mm), Persian Jar 2 (23/50) and the Polo 8 (25/52mm).

Ranking in density (most to least): 58, T3, D3, Polo, PJ, E

Flow through (best to least): E, PJ, Polo, D3=T3=58

face feel (soft with flex to stiff): E, PJ, D3, Polo, 58, T3

I am really fond of the currently available Simpson 2 band hair. No doubt for me the only Simpson hair grade I like!!!

Now I only need a Chubby 1 in 2 band

German, nice purchase. Comparing the Polo 8 two band to Thater is high praise. I face lather too and find two band brushes to work quite well. I still love the Simpson Supers and actually prefer them over their Best & Manchurian offerings. I was thinking of a Chubby 1 as well but the handles are a tad small. Soft tips and great backbone we definitely both agree on!

The hair on that brush looks really good. It seems to consist of the longest hog badger hairs with the whitest tips.

How would you compare it to Manchurian? Does your 2 bands have any scritch or is it gel-like?

German, yes, you do need to get the Chubby 1 in two-band! Great brush! Very nice collection, by the way.

I don't know about a Chubby in 2 band. That is a lot of really thick hair packed into a tiny little area.

Just my personal opinion of course.

This is a tough call as I enjoy all of them. But pressed I would probably pick the Duke 3 and the Emperor 3. The Duke because it is the most balanced brush regarding knot/loft size, density and truly soft tips. It also has the most perfect bulb shape. The Emperor is wonderful to use for face lathering (surprised?) despite the high loft (22/54mm). The hair is kissing your skin Smile)

Thanks. I am really into Simpson 2 band brushes right now Smile normally I favor Thäter and shavemacs above all but for Simpson 2 band I make an exception... Wink

I have the same concern. My T3 feels a lot like a Chubby 2 (26/52mm) and it is on the edge of comfortable scrubby (no scritch though)... I just recently "rediscovered" my Chubby 1 in Super...we will see where SBAD bites next Smile)

Have not tried a Manchurian. The tips are very soft with resilient hair that compares well to Thäter and Rooney 2 band hair...it is not gel like though ... The only brushes that I have encountered with that face feel are the Rooney Heritage XL brushes of the first batch.

Nice, I enjoyed the Manchurian Polo 8 a friend loaned me for a while. I feel I would likely prefer the two band. A Simpson 2 band Rover would complete me!

I could be very tempted by a 2 band Rover but I have not seen any. Simpson custom brushes are unfortunately price
prohibitive... Confused

Yep, I was pricing the Manchurian Rover tonight, and it is just way too much money for that specific brush- almost $80 more than an Emperor 3 in Manchurian with nearly the same knot specs. Mystifying.

Demand and supply Cool
After I have satisfied my early Simpson 2 band SBAD I am now looking for specific brushes coming up with that grade... But since batches can vary greatly I wanted to get some now since you never know when hair characteristics change... And I am very picky when it comes to soft tips... Biggrin

Costs more per handle if you make fewer handles. Doubt that explains all of the $80 though.
