I use an alum block after every shave (4-5 x week).
Great feeling...…
The question is: do you rinse off or leave on for the day before applying an after shave balm???
I have been doin both for years...……..
Opinions requested please.
Thanks, Steve

Rinse... but then I shave _before_ I shower, so it's not like I have an option.

I used to leave it on and then patted my face dry before applying aftershave, but then my technique improved and now I don't use Alum at all.

The only time I use Alum is if I get a weeper. Not many thankfully but I do travel with it none-the-less.

I also shave before I shower and just water up my beard good to soften my face.

If I do use alum I tend to rinse it off after a few minutes as it'll leave a slight residue that's not very attractive, to anyone that notices, or cares.

On those days when I forgot to remove the alum with a rinse I felt tight skin all day, not very pleasant and a humble reminder to rinse and/or use balm/AS. ymmv.

I also use alum immediately after my final rinse of every shave.  I leave it on while I clean up my razor, brush, lather bowl, soap container and the area around the sink.  Then I rinse off the alum before applying witch hazel.  Even though they are both astringents, I find they each do their thing differently so I continue to use them both.  After the witch hazel I apply balm in the colder months, often followed by a splash and just a splash during the warmer months.

With the alum I find it tightens up my skin on my face and neck, which I like.  And the witch hazel feels oddly soothing.

I go over my face with it a couple of times and rinse it almost immediately.  My face will get too dry if I leave it on.

I bought a block when I first started with traditional methods a few years ago. I came to believe that my skin was reacting badly to it.
I may just try it again and see if that's still (or really) the case.

After my initial post shave rinse, if I feel alum is necessary, I will rinse it off after about a minute. Sometimes I rinse with water, sometimes splash some Dickinson’s and then cold water rinse. No scented AS for me 99.9% of the time.

Never use alum, I now prefer Thayers witch hazel after the shave.

If I get a weeper I’ll use the alum.

I don't use it much, but I always wash it off after about a minute.  I don't want to leave aluminum on my skin.  I don't use deodorants with aluminum either.

The alum we use for shaving or underarm antiperspirant is aluminum potassium.  It's molecules are too large to be absorbed by the skin.  Or so I'm told.  I only use alum for shaving and only leave it on for a minute or two and then fully rinse it off.  I don't use alum for deodorant.  Instead I use aluminum free deodorant.

Interesting.  I was not aware of that.  I'm probably over-reacting.  But I think I'll continue to rinse the alum off—I just don't see any reason to leave it on.  As for the deodorant, the aluminum-free ones are just as good, so I'll continue to use them.

I never suggested not rinsing it off.  I always rinse it off after I've cleaned up all my gear.  2 to 3 minutes at most.

I had an alum roll on and it slid out of the container. I slid it over my face, using the long side and  realized it was much easier to hold than the small blocs and was very soothing, as it covers a large area of your face.

I use alum after every shave.  I like the tightening feeling.  I don't rinse it off, but then typically apply witch hazel followed with an AS/splash.  When it dries down, I generally use a balm.  Sometimes based on specific products, etc, I change things up after the alum, but I always use alum and rarely wash it off.
