I was sent a message to introduce myself... I’m going to do that but it’s mostly going to be about my downward spiral into a long and deep rabbit hole they call wetshaving lol. I’m new, I’ve been wetshaving since early October of last year and got involved just while my wife was pregnant. I was using schick quattro’s and hated that right after my neck would burn. It would take me like 2 weeks to get the razor to my face because it was so bad until I avoided buying cartridges. I had always had the curiosity of a straight razor and never been into DE’s.
So I went online because I live in Canada and there is no such thing as a physical wet shave shop in southern Ontario. I found a website called Fendrihan where I pulled the trigger on a couple of low end items just to get the feel of it. I ended purchasing a Fendrihan Shavette with some solingen blades, some Billy jealousy Hydroplane shave soap(I was too cheap to buy a brush) and some other little nick naks.
I liked the feel of the thought of shaving with a straight razor but I butchered my face to the point where I looks like Jason without his mask on. Didn’t matter to me because I loved every second and I’m kind of a thrill junky so I kept at it until I got a bit better. I started wAtching all kinds of videos including Dr.Matt, Anthony Esposito, that creepy guy in adventures of wet shaving that seems to always looks like he’s got kids locked up in the basement. And Many others. Started to pick up more and more technique remembering where I went wrong and what I should have done in that spot.
I then reached out to buy my first real straight razor... a TI Le Dandy from a company called Classic Edge. This time I realllllly butchered my face and got frustrated. Sent it back complaining and ordered another one from the same company to use while the other one was in for sharpening. The second was an Evide SonnAt(another theirs) again shave ready. This edge was much better and got a much nicer shave. When I got the Le Dandy back the edge was still garbage compared to the other razors. This was very frustrating, so I decided to go extreme.
I contacted a very kind gentlemen by the name of Chris at ShaveSmith. This man has SSOOOOO much patience. I was in the process of learning the fundamentals of what made a straight razor a razor at all. Learning about geometry, size, edge, degrees, different types of steels, HRC, homes and all that not so fun stuff. I was really determined to get the ultimate perfect razor. Which inevitably brought me to Chris. ShaveSmith had the most patience with me as we chatted about all of these things during the duration that he had to make my custom. All in all he made me the most beautiful piece that I still cherish to this day.
After these incredibly long discussions, I got more into stones. What they do, which ones are good, which ones are bad so on and so forth. I had settled on getting myself a set of Shapton Glass stones. If I have to tell you about my story of honing, we would be here forever. So I’m going to fast forward a bit and say 80% of the research I did really meant nothing.
One thing that I have learned about straight razors is that they... along with honing, is all based on personal experiment. A very harsh and expensive experiment lol. I now like to say that I have over 40 straights 80% being wade and butcher. 45 soaps, 30 aftershaves, 10 brushes and 2 have not yet arrived.
This may be a rabbit hole but it is one where I love to dig further and further down. Here is my last experiment and I also occasionally do shave Videos to encourage others to join me on this ever lasting experience.

Hope you guys enjoyed my story. I may not be a honemeister but I can get wicked and comfortable edges in less than 8months honing. If I can inspire any of you who read this to do the same, please do not hesitate to ask any questions. I am here to help just as the community helped me.

I hear you...

Everytime I treat myself to a new razor, and my wife asks things like "How many more of these do you need?" or "How much is that thing again?" I tend to tell Fake News... Biggrin

If I ever told her I spent 200 bucks on a DE, I'd probably be hanging on a tree somewhere.

To qoute a friend in another hobby: “if I die, I hope my wife don’t sell these for what I told her I paid...”

Greetings and no worries with the OCD we understand. If I counted up what I spent on sports equipment and shaving it'd amaze even me.

An educated guess: it’s the Leafs for your family?

I‘m a fan of the Canucks, and I’m also a FC Bayern season ticket holder, as that is where I’m from.

Lol ya, they all go for the home team as we’re in Toronto. It’s true loyalty if you ask me!51yrs no Stanley cup but every game still has a full stadium is quite impressive from where I stand lol. My team is Juventus as my background is Italian. But I tend to watch more La Liga as it is more entertaining watching Ramos diving and getting away with it.

Or knock the opposing goalkeeper unconscious. I hate the guy.

If you’re Toronto based, be sure to pay a visit to Maggard razors, if you haven’t already done so.
