Can a blade be a 'dud'?
If so, are SE or DE more prone to be so?

I've never gotten a dud blade, but that is just my personal experience.  I've read posts by guys who have gotten duds.

I'll assume you have been shaving awhile, at least a few hundred blades worth?

More like thousands of blades!  By the way, I only use blades once, so I go through a lot of them.

Merkur and derby are duds to me and I'll use them to scrape paint rather than a hair on my face.

I've only had two dud blades, they were the first two Kai blades I used. I mean, they were stamped crooked. The blade reveal was uneven in the razor, my Feather AS-D2.
All Kai's after that have been great. Dud's can happen, look at my Brother.... Tongue

Total ditto here.  Though I wouldn't necessarily call them "duds" - implying but for a few anomalies, the majority work well.  Not so with Merkur and Derby (and a couple other brands as bad or worse).

I use Merkur to make shims when needed for one of my ATTs that I wanted a little more aggressive.  Derbys, like you, are relegated to more menial tasks around the house.

I attempted one shave with a Merkur blade I got with a razor I purchased and almost tossed the razor for the blade (the bath water was that bad; the baby less so Smile ).

I've gone through maybe 500? blades now (it's been over 3 years) - I have noticed an occasional dud blade here and there, but it's rare - and I have to wonder if some of those weren't just the result of bad technique on my part.

Every bulk purchase of 100 will result in some dud blades. It's quite inevitable.

My thoughts, as well.

Duds happen and you’re question about SE offering more duds? I have a box of 100 SE that the first handful of blades were truly horrible. Went to the other end of the box and shaved great.

3 Years of shaving, only 1 dud. Used it 3 times to make sure it wasn’t me or the soap. Switched out the blade and all was right again. It happens, but not often in my experience.
