Often people will accept a lie (or a misrepresentation, or an oversimplification) because it's more comfortable than to find and embrace the truth - finding out what is really going on can be hard and require a lot of time, effort and dedication. Often people are just too busy or worn down to search for it or accept it - a lot of people suffer chronic decision fatigue, and as such just swallows the sound bites and predigested opinions of others (often people who are seen as authorities) in part because it's convenient.
But to use a lie, or a misrepresentation, or an oversimplification, as a fundamental building block for your world view... it's like building your house on sandy soil. Once it's washed away, the whole thing comes crashing down.
We don't have to like how things really are. But we should accept it, incorporate it, and work to change it for the better if we can.
