Active duty officer, RNoAF. I'm not any good with poems or haikus, and the only limericks I know of are a) in Norwegian, and b) very much not suited for mixed company... so story time!

I present; the story of why I switched to traditional wetshaving.

Back in 2010 I was getting ready to deploy on a mission abroad... a 12 month tour of duty to Southern Sudan (as it was known at the time) as a UN Military Observer, to help monitor the rather fragile peace between the rebels in the South and the government in the North. With a referendum due to be held while I was down there, tensions were running high, and one of the culture briefs I received before leaving stressed the importance of proper grooming in order to appear to the locals as a person with authority.
Cargo culting is alive and well in Sub-Saharan Africa; if you look and dress an an important person, the locals will assume that you're important and worth listening to.
So... for an officer proper grooming means no scruffy beard. While I wasn't about to give up on my goatee, I needed to shave while I was down there... but electricity isn't everywhere, and I was told that I could most likely not expect to find cartridges for my razor... a challenge that needed solving.
My beloved wife suggested I look into that old fashioned razor craze she had read about online, since she figured that old fashioned DE blades might be easier to find in deepest Africa. So I thought about it, I browsed a number of shaving blogs and forums... and I decided to give it a go. I ordered a beginners kit - an aggressive Parker with a stack of Feathers - and it arrived a couple of weeks before I left. The rest is, as they say, history.

Needless to say, the first few shaves were... somewhat bloody. And in the local shops I could find no DE blades, no carts, only expensive no-brand disposables that looked like I should call for a helicopter med-evac before I started shaving.

I'm in. Active duty US Army. The following attempt at a haiku is from my experience as a Paratrooper in the 173rd.

The howling wind becomes calm
I now breathe again

Not in, but great PIF. Thanks for doing this Jack, and thank you for your service ladies & gents.
A couple of photos from 100 years ago when I served. The first was taken as I parachuted (tucked a point & shoot film number into my shirt), and the second on the drop zone as others were still coming down.
