So called "porch pirates" are unknown over here - the mailman simply don't bring any packages that won't fit in a mailbox - but I've heard plenty about them from my inlaws.. so I really enjoyed watching this video Smile

Being a nerd and a tech-head helps too... the over-engineered gizmo he built just tickles my brain in the right way Tongue

That is amazing.  These need to be mass produced and sold.  With these out in the world there would be far fewer package thieves stealing our stuff.  Ingenious on every level.

Great video Hans!  I wonder how much that device cost to make.  The four smartphones alone are about $1,000 each.

On a serious note, this is a huge problem for both consumers and online retailers.

I just had an issue today! I have a homemade flag thing that goes up to tell me if I have mail in the box, that way I don't have to go out and check it.
Someone did in the middle of the night I guess. We have a problem in my area with mail pirates.

Here's how mine works, level 1, Rolex the watch dog. This is his normal, every day job.
He barks at everything that passes the house.

I can look out his window and see if the mail has arrived.....NO MAIL

MAIL ! I can see the flag up from Rolex's guard post. When the door is opened the flag pops up, I
get the mail, reset the flag. Saves me a lot of walking.... Cheers

Ingenious and very cool. Kudos to the inventor.

Two other ideas:

1) If it weren't cruel, I would like to see a vicious pit bull chained to the package delivery area. Our local PD says that a dog is the best burglar alarm system there is.

2) Use this idea to dispense skunk oil.

Here is another idea that a neighbor of mine did.  He took his empty Amazon delivery boxes and filled them with junk he does not want.  Tapped them up and set them on the front porch.  Sure enough, when he got home from work the boxes were gone along with his junk.  But just to be safe, the crooks were videoed.

I’ve seen a video of someone that filled a box with treasures excavated from his cat box. Oh how I would love to have seen the look on the thieves face!!!

A friend of mine lived (since moved) in Santa Monica, and couldn’t have anything [packages] mailed to his own address. He saw the kids wearing the gear they stole from him, and there’s nothing he could about it.
