World war one was the first war where civians far from the front line suddenly found themselves facing the possibility of violent death; German strategic air raids were more likely to hit someone's home than a legal target. And the fear of death - or the fear of missing the spectacle of a zeppelin flying past - meant you might have to vacate your warm bed at night, but you simply couldn't run out on the street in your night gown; that would be downright scandalous!

We lie in a senior community and had a fire alarm at 3AM (a false alarm).  The sleepwear was boring.

I am constantly amazed at how the marketing types can take most any subject and turn it into a reason you “have to have” the latest product.
