Well, to weigh back into what I started,  I prefer fans almost exclusively.  Aesthetically and practically.  The exception in my eyes is when you get to around 28mm and larger, then appearance preferences disappear and it's  a matter of hair and loft. But pointy bulbs are never even considered no matter the size.

I face lather all the time and prefer a fan-shaped knot. I do have a number of bulb-shaped knots, however. I don’t like bulb-shaped knots if the knot is dense and has lots of backbone. I like smaller knots of 22 mm, but no bigger than 24 mm, diameter, as I don’t like the knot to smother my face. I like the knot to caress my face without being floppy; hence shavemac and Thater 3-band silvertip badger are among my favourites along with Simpson best badger and shavemac Finest. My floppiest brush is a Kent BK4 silvertip and the one with the ideal backbone is my Simpson Colonel best. I used to have several shavemac 2-band silvertip bulb knots, but I sold them as they were too dense and too firm even when fan-shaped. Given my preference for smaller knots with medium density, I find the fan-shape provides the ideal face-feel.

I have only bulb brushes and I use them for both face and bowl lathering.
