Black fern is closer in the sense that it isn't cologne like to me where B&M Reserve is very similar to Penhaligon's English Fern to my nose.  That said the Black fern and MDC fougere are not very similar but I like both quite a bit.  All three actually.  I use Myrsol Agua Balsamica with MDC original and Fougere it is also a natural scent.

I should have added Agua Balsamica as a 3rd option, I've seen it suggested alot for the MdC Fougere. Do you find the scent similar, amd how is the Myrsol performance?

I think the scent is a little closer to MDC original but it's unique and pairs well with the Fougere.  It is definitely more herbal than lavender to me but very refreshing and should not clash with cologne since it is rather light, fades within an hour and stays close to the skin.  Ingredient list is short but I think the oils add nice healing properties so the performance is great for me.  Nice bracing sting but not crazy and has a cooling effect for me but does not contain menthol.  I think it's natural effects from the essential oils used but I'm no expert.  If you are not into herbal it will not be for you.  If you have never smelled it I think it is similar to Speick, which I think is another solid option by the way, but with rosemary and thyme in there instead of speick and camphor and none of the extras Speick has.  I still reach for Agua Balsamica more than Speick because I prefer the lighter scent and don't need all the extras Speick has in there. Speick projects more in my opinion and will clash with your cologne for a few hours.  I don't like walking around with my scent announcing my arrival so I have gravitated to lighter, more natural scented soaps and aftershaves especially if I am planning on wearing a cologne that day.

Ordered Myrsol AB and Black Fern samples from Maggards to test.

Black Fern is a dead ringer for MdC Fougere, IMO.

Just as a footnote, I tested a soap sample of Black Fern (not the AS).  They were out of stock on the AS.

As a follow up, I ordered a full bottle of Black Fern.

Scent is very, very close, and the performance is outstanding
