Sometimes I'll be reading a scent description and really liking all the notes except one or two, and therefore I don't end up buying/trying the product.

For me, the notes that ruin the mood are amber, aquatic, ozone, and foods (except citrus or herbs). I'm sure there are a few others I'll think of too...

What are yours?

Barber Shop description of the scent, wintergreen Christmas scent,  and any scent that is over-powering.  I have no desire to be a walking Bergamot tree or Cuban cigar.

With my allergies and lack of knowledge of scents, I have no idea what most scents are like.  I tend to look for favorite scents, overall scent and mild to medium scent

Vanilla

The slightest hint of it reminds me of a cheap Christmas candle

Although I do like many of the scents already mentioned, I dislike scents described as dark, wet and earthy, like the floor of a damp forest or a Scottish bog.

Clove is something that does not agree with me if it's very strong at all.  Sometimes, that eliminates a fair amount of bay rums.

Cinnamon.  I love the scent but turn into Lobster Face with cinnamon in the mix.

I'll add to my list some that were mentioned : cinnamon and clove (bc they cause burn), oud (I don't get it, why is this popular?), and vanilla (bc it usually means we're heading down one of several wrong paths... Oriental, or feminine, or sweet to name a few paths)

  1. Oud (Cannot stand it in any form)
  2. Coffee (I don't drink coffee I drink tea my dear...)
  3. Chocolate (Having long ago eliminated sugary foods from my diet these sweet gourmand scents turn my stomach)
  4. "Aquatic" (Ahh the lowest common denominator scent)
  5. Vanilla (Too sweet, reminiscent of scented candles as mentioned by someone else)
  6. Tonka (As above, especially when they are paired together!)
  7. Iso E Super (I'm not certain that I dislike this as I've never smelt is in isolation however I dislike pretty much every fragrance which contains it so there is some circumstantial evidence...)

Sweet florals: jasmine, ylang ylang, plumaria, tuberose, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, gardenia ... but I love many roses.

Smoky vetiver, aka ‘wet campfire ashes’, vanilla except in trace quantities, overly sweet scents (eliminates almost all of Tom Ford) like pipe tobacco, candle shop scents, food scents except for citrus and some herbs like rosemary and thyme. I have not found many leather scents that I like, but I’m open to the right one. Tobacco if it’s well done, like ABC tobacco verde AS balm, SMN tobacco toscano.

Vanilla, tonka bean and/or any "gourmand" description.  If I see any of those in the description, I usually pass.  Good thread!

Don't like anything food apart from fruits, like citrus.
Lavender (I like it on fabric, i.e. bed sheets, but mostly can't stand it in the bathroom).
