I remember reading CG (Brian T) talking about the new baseplate design....here's what he says:

"The original Charcoal razor was visually inspired by the vintage Gillette NEW. This led to much confusion with customers
believing they were purchasing a Gillette clone. The new razor design looks different but actually shaves the same as the original.
Your face can't tell which generation you are using."

I also remember him saying somewhere that the new 4 gen plate has been designed to reduce some of the audio feedback.
He also made some changes that lead to better blade clamping.

Maybe Im biased but I liked the look of the Gen 3 plates...a lot.

I'm confused. On the website, there's only 1st generation baseplates for brass although the latest copper are now 2nd generation. Only the top caps are going to 4th.

@Tester28 was talking of 3rd and 4th generation plates. That's what I didn't understand. I'm not on the social media sites so possibly just unaware of developments that far ahead?

Here's my 2 cents. We all have different skin texture, beard qualities, and density and what we enjoy tolerating in blade feel. I like aggressive blade feel, good feedback razors. The Raw 10 was not for me mild plate was useless and the mid aggressive was not smooth or that efficient. The L3 DC is what I use and with a good soap. I also feel the same using a Gillette Single Ring Ball End with a Stork Aristocrat handle and the PAA Ascension SS also with a different handle, these razors along with the CGL3 DC are my daily rotating shavers. For me these razors are efficient and smooth. One of the things these razors have in common is that they all have thin profile heads.

The Top caps are up to 4th gen but baseplates are just coming out as 2nd gen

If I understand the product evolution so far correctly:

Top Caps: Gen 1/2/3/4
Baseplates: Gen 1/2

Top Caps: Gen 1, 2 and 3 are discontinued.

Baseplate: Gen 1 discontinued.

Moving forward, he will only be making heads that feature Gen 4 top cap paired with Gen 2 baseplates.

And he is going to focus on the most desirable config, which at the moment is Level 2.

According to CG, he hasn't begun designing the level 3 plate yet. But that news was couple
of weeks old, so maybe he has.

I haven’t used GEN 1 Level 2 baseplate, so I can’t compare the smoothness...but the GEN 2 Level 2 baseplate’s smoothness matches the RS-10 with the mild plate in smoothness, but it has better efficiency!

Hello!  I have and use an RS-10 with the mild and aggressive baseplate.  I also have a Charcoal Goods Razor with the Level-1 and Level-2 baseplate.

My opinion solely on performance is that the RS-10 mild baseplate gives a better, more comfortable shave than the Charcoal Goods Level-1 baseplate.

However, the Charcoal Goods Level-2 baseplate gives a more efficient and comfortable shave than the RS-10 aggressive baseplate.

So for me, the RS-10 with mild baseplate is neck and neck with the Charcoal Goods razor with a Level-2 baseplate!

What are your thoughts on which one works better for you?

PS. I have an unused CG razor head with a Level-1 Open Comb baseplate...I am going to use it next week, and my whole position might be turned on it’s head!

I totally agree with your findings.  The RS-10 with mild plate works flawlessly for me as does the CG Level 2 baseplate. I also get great shaves with my level 1 baseplate.  Both are Gen 1. If these two razors were the only ones I was left with for the rest of my life,  I would be a happy man.

I've been considering a CG level 2 for a while, I think you've just convinced me! The RS-10 mild is by far the best razor I've ever used, so I'll be very happy if this is true.

So just to get this straight the CG2 matches or beats the RS10 aggressive plate in efficiency?

The person above was comparing the CG2 to the MILD RS-10 plate.

The CG Level 2 Gen 2 is very close to the efficiency of the RS-10 Aggressive plate, but feels as smooths as the RS-10 mild baseplate.  It pretty much blew my mind, and I am buying a second CG Level 2 Gen 2 baseplate, except in brass to match my other razor head from CG.

Certainly the RS-10, and the CG with the L2G2 are my favorite razors...the Oneblade Genesis/Blackblade and Feather AS-D2 round out the top four!

I just had a magnificent shave with the RS-10 using the mild baseplate, a Personna 74 Medical Prep on its 14th use, and Stirling Exexutive Man shave soap. A four pass irritation free BBBS result!

I don’t think anyone can go wrong with either razor!

I stand by my thoughts on both having about equal smoothness, with the CG L2G2 baseplate having the better efficiency!

For me, the Lvl 2 plate (Gen 1) has excellent audio feedback (high and crisp), and delivers
very pleasing efficiency, smoothly.

He has now tweaked it to look a little different, because he felt that Gen 1 reminded people too
much of a NEW LC head.

Of course, he couldn't do it for surely cosmetic reasons, he's an artisan of the highest order.
So he changed the blade clamping mechanism from single bar to double pronged. And rounded off some edges
etc.

The new Gen2 plates have less audio feedback....Im not inclined to buy one just to see how it differs.
He has himself said that there is no difference in shave. New buyers get the new plate from now on, but
those who have the Gen 1 shouldn't feel they have a lesser razor.

Given a choice I would still pick Gen 1 plates over Gen 2. To me they look better and the audio feedback is
second to none.
