Today the Gillette single ring old type I ordered on EBAY arrived from Latvia, of all places. It’s in pretty good shape, but it has no serial number that I can see. Is it likely pre-1920 or sometime in the 20s? it’s a short comb.

I’m pretty sure it’s a thin cap.

I'm no expert but I think they stopped putting serial numbers on the single rings in 1920, which I also believe is the last year that they were made.  Does yours have the diamond Gillette logo on the bottom of the bottom plate?  Maybe someone else knows better than I.

It does have the diamond shaped logo.

Sources are a little unclear, but it seems that they stopped putting S/N on the Old Style razors (the 102 / 102A) about the same time they changed from the thin cap (102) to the thick cap (102A) - around 1920/1921 on US manufactured razors. The situation for British made Gillettes in regard to serial numbers are a bit more fuzzy... is there any patent information stamped anywhere on the razor (also check the inner barrel)?

No patent number anywhere and nothing on the inner barrel. Probably puts in somewhere in the 1920s. Thanks.

Yes, but if she has a single ring, she very well may be engaged.  You could find yourself in trouble.

Your quip is closer to the truth than you might imagine, given my wife’s views on new razor expenditures.

Only an engagement ring means she is still in the dating market
