I've been thinking about this off and on for a while.

I am open to suggestions from those with more experience in the field...the bar is low!

A strop that can take a newbie's damage may be in order too.

I am about to do a den cleaning.. far too many straights. I never wanted to be a collector but...

What are you looking for? Size, shape, grind.. price range..?

From what I gather, a 5/8 round point is a good place to start.

It can be a "beater" -- I'd just like to have it be shave ready, though, if I may (in the total absence of honing knowledge).

All in, I can see myself spending maybe $40? Don't know how reasonable that is to expect.
