Hey guys,

I purchased this brush in 09'-10', and I've just recently gotten back into wet shaving. I can't seem to find much info on it. Anyone familiar with it?

It's one of the Ivory/Tortoiseshell brushes (probably a 2XL) Lee Sabini made after he bought Rooney.  He didn't make many of them due to the amount of time it takes to assemble the handle blank.  Bottom line:  it's a rare brush worth keeping (but IF you decide to sell it, give me a call  Winky .)

Can you post a picture of the opposite side of the handle?  It will provide more info, specifically if the brush you have is a Stubby 1 or 2.

Rooney release a batch of brushes called "Rooney Heritage Stubby" (Stubby 1 and Stubby 2) shaving brushes with a "Faux Tortoise Shell Ring."  The handles were stuffed with Rooney's Heritage-grade 3-Band Super Badger hair.  The Stubby 1s had a 22mm knot with a loft of 46mm.  The Stubby 2 had a 28mm knot set at 48mm (if memory serves me correctly).  They sold pretty quickly and are very special brushes!

At one time, I had a matching pair.  I still have the Stubby 1 Heritage with the "Faux Tortoise Shell Ring."  I gifted the Stubby 2 to my son.

If it's a Stubby 1, the top line on the branding will read "HAND 1 MADE."

I definitely remember seeing it go on sale when they went on sale. I would say it was more likely 2010 when it was released. If you browse the forums enough you should be able to track down a definitive date.

These were the finest brushes ever made in my
opinion , for me these are better than the Simpson two bands and the Rooney finest and two band heritage first release.

See: http://shavenook.com/showthread.php?tid=59471&pid=935857#pid935857.

Lynn McInroy gave me a spreadsheet a while back with FrankLynn Technology's handle production records for work performed on behalf of Lee from October 2005 through October 2013. It includes references to Truefitt & Hill, Rooney, and Morris & Forndran. Nomenclature doesn't always conform with Lee's or street-usage, e.g., what Lee called the L7 is listed as the Mandarin in the spreadsheet.

I just noticed this thread last night (we've been travelling for close to two weeks), so didn't look to see what might show up for these handles until today.

With the exception of some travel brushes, the only entries I found that indicate Bone or Ivory in combination with Tortoiseshell are pasted in below. The numbers in the right-most column are counts.

6-Mar-09         Stubby                 Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 1    13
                           Stubby                  Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 2    16
                           Stubby                  Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 3    17

25-Mar-09       Stubby                 Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 1    19
                           Stubby                 Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 2     21
                           Stubby                 Bone/Tortoiseshell     Size 3     18

13-May-13      Chubby 2-Bead      Ivory & T'shell          Size 3     11

I asked Frank about 2-bead Stubbies. The fairly early Stubby 1 (old Finest) I have only has a single bead. He said the Beehive "started the  craze for two beads".

I should clarify that I think dates state when handles were turned. Frank also finished the handles and he used vibratory tumblers, so I assume "batches" might have have been completed at the end of the finishing stage. In some cases dates appear to be tied to "dispatch". Frank used small bench-top lathes like those we have. Production was small-scale.
