It was time for an addition to the herd. I've got badger, boar, and synthetic. Time for a horse hair. This Vie Long arrived a few days ago, and I've had two delightful shaves with it. Highly recommended. It's a little soft, but I enjoy variety, and it will definitely be in the regular rotation.

Wonderful brush. You remind me of how wonderful the shaves are with it. Gonna use it tmrw.

Just take care of the combing bit (when the brush is dry) and you will have years of good shaves with it. Cheers!

Looks great. Tell me: are the tips prickly at all?

That's a very nice handle.  I'm not sure why horse hair brushes don't get more attention.

Lovely brush Smile

I love horse hair brushes, and like Ricardo I've never quite understood why they don't get more love. I suspect they never regained much ground after the anthrax scare a hundred years ago...

David; what is the ratio of tail vs mane? All of my horse hair brushes favours tail hairs, and tend towards stiff rather than soft.

50/50.

I may get another since I like this one so much, and because they're not too expensive.  I'll see if there's one that favours tail hairs.

I see they have some that are 35% mane and 65% tail.  I'll probably try one of those next.

I got a 60/40 and a 65/35, and the later is noticeable stiffer than the former. Not sure if they still do the 60/40 mix, but if they do it's a very nice mix. Tempted to go for a 50/50 at some point, to try that ratio out as well.

I also got a Vie Long with mixed badger and horse hair, and it's also a very enjoyable brush that combines the fluffiness of badger with the stiffness of horse hair Smile

I've never given horse hair a shot, but I've heard that Vie Long is one of the best for that type.

Where are you guys getting them? I've checked several websites and none have given the tail/mane ratio.

I know Gifts&Care list the ratio on their pure Vie Long horsehair brushes - but you have to click on the little down arrow under the description on each brush to see it (that'll also give dimensions and handle materials).

Thanks. They do list the ratio for most of the HH brushes, including those from Epsilon.

I love the idea of using horse hair. I grew up with horses. Last one we had died on Christmas day a couple years ago. We'd had her for almost 30 years, and we kept some tail and main hair.

But I just can't tolerate the scritch.

It appears that the white hair ones are 50/50, and the brown hair ones are 35/65 mane tail.

Epsilon has some that are 26 and 27mm, and that definitely interests me.  Sadly, they're all sold out at the moment.  I'm on the list to be notified by Gifts & Care.

HA!  They're back in stock.  I just ordered the 27mm fan shape in brown hair.  Free shipping too.

It will be interesting to compare it to the white hair one.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 15% MAKES!

Oh my goodness, what a difference indeed.  My Epsilon was waiting fo me when I returned from a trip the other day.  It's 35% mane, 65% tail.  I've used it 3 times.

Night and day, compared to my 50/50 one would be an understatement.  Tips are very prickly, and there is a whole lot of scritch.  Too much scritch for me, but maybe it will soften up a little after a few more uses.

Also, the hairs are all bunched up in the middle.  I might be able to comb them out, but I don't think it was glued very well.

It looks great, and I love 27mm fan shape.  But, I'm hoping I will grow to like using more after it breaks in.

So, I've had lots of shaves with it.

Tips are still very prickly.  And, it's a little softer, but not much.  Overall, not a great brush.  Won't make it into my rotation.

I recommend 50/50 mane & tail.  My Vie-Long is in regular rotation, and I love it.
