If you’re lucky, shrinkage happens. I’ve used this alum block since ~mid 2017 for perhaps 75% of my shaves. I’ll probably jinx myself, but this is the first block I have used this long without it breaking. Next time I start one I’ll jot the date on the box.

A much better track record than what I've had with alum blocks from Turkey.

Allume di Rocca alum does quite nicely for me, nice handle, no slipping, and after months of use:

Whoa. My osma alum blocks last maybe 6 months - shrinking all the while.

I am still using my first Alum Block, Gentleman Jon, that I bought back in early 2015.  It's really pretty small now and it's becoming difficult to keep it in my fingers as I rub it on my face.  I guess I'll just keep using it until the time it slips out of my hands and falls on the floor.  Then I'll open up my new block of Osma that is waiting in the wings.

I have a "Bloc Hyalin" from Féret Parfumeur, was expensive but seems to have a much denser crystal structure than the cheaper blocks. I've had it over 2 years now and use it after every shave (which is daily) I would estimate there is around 60% remaining.

It seems our experiences with alum are rather varied. I’m interested in hearing from other shavers. Feel free to post your alum pics and thoughts.

I'd post a pic of my shrinking alum block but I can't seem to do that on my Mac.  Nothing I've tried works.  Oh well.

I only use my Osma alum block for weepers, so it still looks quite new.  Smile

Todd, try Request Desktop Site. Then in the reply field click the icon for adding a photo.

Celestino, I’m guessing then, that you don’t find alum to be refreshing for the skin? Sure it’s great for the occasional weeper, but I like how my skin feels after applying alum and then rinsing with cold water and witch hazel.

I'm a little slow.  Where do I find "Request Desktop Site"?

I bought my Feret perhaps 3 years back and only use it for weepers and cuts and it's almost 60% still there.

To those who are wondering why their alum blocks are shrinking faster : it actually depends on the density of alum block assuming that none of you are rinsing it in warm water post using it...
