Anyone remember/use the discontinued C&E SAO soap? Marvelous scent!! Anyone know of a current soap with that scent? A mild, slightly cherry-like, soapy smell.

Hi John,

I just had my first shave with the cream version of this great product this past week and WOW was it great!
Thanks for asking this question, and I hope you (we) find a suitable replacement soon! Biggrin

I was fortunate (or unfortunate, whichever way you look at it) to try a sample of the SAO cream soon after I started wet shaving, some 5 years ago. It really is/was a top shelf cream. Every time I stopped into a C&E store I'd inquire if they had any plans to bring it back. Sadly I always left disappointed, having been told no.

I have both the soap and the cream. I haven't found anything else that's close to their scent.

I can't speak from experience but when C&E Sweet Almond pops up on the forums from time to time, I've noticed quite a few veterans seem to point towards Cyril Salter Almond cream as a decent consolation prize. I never have tried it, but it's on my loooooong list of stuff to try.

Never had the pleasure of trying the cream; understand it was truly great. Was hoping I might identify a soap towards the day when mine is gone. The scent is truly nice; the lather is rather TOBS-like.

Well it has been quite sometime since I've used it, so it's difficult for me to remember the exact fragrance...

Some almond soaps/creams I have enjoyed recently would be: Caswell-Massey (the scent is great, the cream really isn't that bad), Trumpers, and Col. Conk. These IMO, are pretty delicious slightly sweet/cherry-ish almond scented.

Do keep us up to date if you find something similar, as I'd love to pick one up.

Hiya,

I can't recall sniffing the C&E soap, but I'm very familiar with how the cream smells. To my nose, it had a kind of faint lilac thing going on. Certainly no marzipan note at all.

Closest I've found scentwise is the Institut Karite soap. Very similar fragrance, and a top performer. One of the better French products.

Give that a try sometime,

Martin

Does it smells like the bitter/sweet almond Italian "croaps" scent?

Teiste - this may sound odd, but I primarily smell a soapy hibiscus type scent from this cream. I'll make sure a sample falls in the next box that gets shipped from me to you Wink

Would D R Harris soap or cream be a good option?

Cream-wise, DRH performance isn't even in the same ballpark as the C&E Sweet Almond Oil.

I love some DRH soaps, but I haven't tried the C&E to compare... the scents are certainly different as well.

Sorry, Brian, I don't understand. Are you saying DRH is better than C&E, or worse than C&E? My apologies for the confusion.

Have tried D.R. Harris almond soap, and it is not similar in aroma to the C&E SAO soap. Use D.R. Harris lavender soap, and it is a better lathering soap than the C&E SAO soap, at least to me. Better in slickness and in cushion. I like the SAO mostly for the scent.

My bad, I should have been more clear Smile

I would take the SAO cream's performance over DRH cream performance 10 times out of 10.
DRH has some phenomenal scents, but IMHO their cream performance is definitely lacking.

It seems that those SAO soaps and creams were very good indeed.

I am really tempted to try the Salter's Classic Almond cream...I keep hearing it's comparable to C&E SAO. I've tried finding a definitive answer as to whether or not there is true SAO in Salter's but can't find anything. Fendrihan's description says it has SAO in it but reading the ingredients from other websites, I don't see it listed...who knows. Huh
