I haven't purchased shaving soap in a couple of years because I felt that I had all that I needed. I feel it's time for a change, so I'm opened to any suggestions.

Here's a short list of my favorites:

Razorock XXX
Soap Commander Peppercorn/Citrus/Cedar and the Honey/Musk/Patchouli
Barrister & Mann Latha Oceana
Saponificio Varesino Felce
Cold River Soap Works Colonia Mediterrania

I feel that I have enough Colonia scents. A rose musk combination might be interesting, if it would come in a great soap.

I don't know of a rose/musk combo, but the Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli soap from Declaration Grooming is one of my favorite scents (I've also got the aftershave and EdT). It also is a tremendously effective soap in the current Milksteak base.

I go by bases, scents be damned. There has literally been a revolution over the past year intensifying significantly in the past 2-3 months. The bases are getting incredible combinations of slickness, cushion and especially post shave skin benefits previously thought impossible.

My top supplier is Grooming Dept and their revised Nai and Kairos bases are on another planet. Now the Mallard is taking such a radical leap foreward later this month

Wholly Kaw took their Donkey and Buffalo base beyond their standards with Siero which is just incredible

New guy on the block Cutting Edge has jumped in with both feet and guns blazing

Dragonsbeard has extensive skin care experience within the industry and he is about to unload with unique soaps shortly

Declaration Grooming is often credited being a better soapmaker than brush artisan, which is stating a lot!

My perspective is forget the established big boys and watch the artisans. Well and truly

JabonMan Rosa Oud.  A superb soap.  There is a reason why JabonMan soaps have such an international following.

Along with the Milksteak base from Declaration Grooming and the Siero from Wholly Kaw and the various Grooming Dept one, you should highly consider the Sego base from Zingari Man.

I haven’t tried the newest formulas from Declaration Grooming and Wholly Kaw, but the previous versions were very good. Wholly Kaw went immediately into my top 5 and that was just with the donkey milk formula (I do like the buffalo formula as well). Once I put La Savonniere du Moulin into a larger container, it’s been a really solid performer though like Mike’s, it takes a while to load. I like to give a shout out to Shannon’s soaps ‘rust belt reserve’ which I quite enjoy (lakeshore drive is a wonderful scent).

JabonMan used to have a Rose Musk actually. Heavenly scent. It wasn't a great seller from what I remember. Performance was not that impressive either....but we're talking maybe 8-10 years ago.

Got to say that it's brilliant from the marketing standpoint to change the base every few months to get more frenzied buying.

Feel compelled to comment that some of the artisans changing bases are delivering demonstrably improved glide, cushion and/or post shave with each iteration.  That is just a fact.  Can not think of an instance where the reputable artisans have taken a step backwards in these regards.  While it generates hype, it also delivers results.  For example, every Porsche 911 variant from the 60s thru the mid 2000s was demonstrably superiour to the one superannuated (until the 991 & 992 - which were supersized for the Chinese market to permit chauffeuring the wealthy and the governments push to electrify).

Are there any suggestions for a cheapskate?  Somehow I just can't bring myself to spend $20-30 for a bar of soap.

If you can go $20 Cutting Edge solidly in top 3 shave soaps at any price from my experience.  Easily supplant Siero WK and Sero Zingari.  Dave's soaps are fantastic based on execution without reliance on costly ingredients; strongly recommended.  Best scents tried have been Mahogany and the Citrus Woods pretty good too.  Absolutely promise you will be impressed.

Mike’s is $10-15 depending in which scent and whether you buy puck only, or puck in PET container.

Yes. I was thinking along those lines. There’s also Shannon’s and Mystic Water which are top quality and inexpensive soaps.
