Help me out while you’re sitting around the house with nothing to do...?

After using my vintage EverReady, I’ve decided that I NEED a modern SE razor.  Vintage razors are just ugly to me.

I don’t think an aluminum razor will perform as well as a SS razor.  But I’m open to that.  No, I don’t want to spend more than say, $150...$100 or less, would be better.

Seems that I could use half blades and not increase my inventory with Artist Club or GEM type blades.  Is this a bad idea?  Any suggestions?

Also seems like a pivoting head is silly...is this true?
I just want a SE razor that works!

It seems that lack of inventory of SE razors is a problem.  What’s up with that?

Pete

Pete, I’m far from a SE expert, but I do enjoy Schick injector shaves. They’re very inexpensive and easy to find. Try one and find out Smile

I suggest you consider a Blackland Sabre (used from BST).  Gives great shaves and uses the relatively more common and inexpensive GEM blades.

I know it’s ridiculous...but I just think the injector razors are butt ugly.  (and not like Elle McPherson’s butt)

You seriously cannot consider a GEM Micromatic "ugly"... while the design language may be outmoded - straddling as it do the divide between "classic" Art Deco and Streamline Modern Art Deco - it's not ugly by any stretch of the imagination.

As for a modern single edge.. injectors have already been suggested (they are still manufactured). Asylum Rx and Paradigm got rave reviews, but are hard to score. Personally I wouldn't go for a "half DE" razor, but your mileage may vary.

Same as V2, but in steinless steel.
Just subscribe RR mailing list about when available ...

BTW, aluminium V2 is a great shaver.
And has some nice colors ...

As always gents...thanks for your wise counsel.

2 questions...

1) why not a half DE blade?  I’m aware that what makes a SE razor different/better is a more rigid blade.  Is that true?
2) am I wrong, or is it truly subjective...that aluminum, or distinctly less weight will never be as easy to use, compared to SS or Ti??

I own an aluminum RR Lupo and don’t find it to be nearly as effective as I though it would be.  Maybe if it was my daily driver, it would.  Regardless, that’s why I didn’t buy a Focus R48...well that, and the R48 looks like it should be a party favor at a 5 yo birthday party.  Wheeeeeee!

And yes, I really do think...respectfully...that a micromatic looks like a Rube Goldberg cartoon...much more than even my EverReady.  And the GEM blades remind me of a paint scraper or a box cutter.  I’m much more comfortable with my Aristocrat, or one of my flare tips.  While I appreciate vintage ideas...and I did purchase your book...I still don’t have an interest in owning a rolls razor, a sheet metal razor or a steam thresher. ? Undecided

Ah, but is a Rube Goldberg cartoon ugly Wink ?

As for the half-a-blade; while I do know that you can buy half-blades I feel that if a razor requires one to snap something in two to use it, then perhaps the razor should have been designed for a narrower blade to begin with? Most single edge blades - disregarding the GEM blades off course - is about half as wide as a DE blade to begin with.

YMMV, as always. but the sad truth is that there is precious few new models of single edge razors available compared to DE and vintage SE- and when a new model shows up, it tends to sell out in short order.

IMHO, It's true.
DE blades are poor technology in front of the new AC blade.

IMHO, not true.
True BBS comes from three passes with WTG / ATG / XTGR direction.
Light weight shavers help the passes against one or more path of the grain.
All depends on the technique.
It requires experience.

Lots of experienced users say the opposite.
I've never used RR Lupo, but my fav is a light and efficient razor which is similar. (Maggard V3 / MR14)

Actually It's a well engeneered product.
I do not like that project, but It's very well done.

Just edge and coating are different.
With old SE razors, I did not like them.
BTW, with the right razor now I love these too.

Some folks like short handles, some like heavy razors, some like Astra, some like TOBS.  Mileage varies...

Here’s my 3 choices...so far.
ATT Single edge SE1
Classic Shaving Enoch
Classic Shaving Occam’s SE
I’m leaning towards the Occam’s SE, mostly because of the different plates.
I think the Enoch is maybe too aggressive?  And I’m assuming the ATT even with the straight bar is too.

I need feedback, if you’ve got any!

I’m not sure what too aggressive is, but the ATT SE1 is pretty mild. While I prefer aggressive razors like the asylum RX, the ATT SE1 is an excellent razor that I use often.

The weight of the razor as much as blade exposure determines a razor's aggressiveness. To me, aggressiveness comes from the pressure of the blade on the skin. As we have all heard when starting out, just let the weight of the razor glide on the surface of your skin. that proposition takes some skill that comes with practice.

To me the Colonial's General SE razor is an amazing razor.

Beautiful to look at, not as much as the Asylum RX though, and really efficent and just aggressive enough to allow for a comfortable shave.

I own the RR Hawk aluminium, the General ans the Asylum Rx, and prefer my General.

Thanks Artlogon!
The General looks exactly like what I was looking for!
Unfortunately, it appears that SE razor manufacturers have all either:
1) sold their entire inventory and they’re now wealthier than Bruce Springsteen.
2) they recognized the supply/demand situation and have raised their prices.
No razors at Colonial, Asylum, or Razorock...so I assume they’re all out on David Geffen’s yacht.
I went ahead and ordered an Occam’s SE Razor since it was on sale and available.

Pete
