What do you gentlemen consider the "essential" brushes to have or , at least , to try?

Boar , badger , synthetic , horse , mixed hair....

My list :

Badgers

-Simpson Wee Scot best badger

-Simpson Duke 3 best badger

-Simpson Chubby 2 best badger

-shavemac 177 silvertip

-Semogue SOC two band

-Vie Long silvertip or two band badger. The silvertip is pure luxury.

-Rooney 1/1 or Wet Shaving products Stubby silvertip , if you are a die hard facelatherer.

Boars

-Semogue 1305 and 1800

-Omega Pro 48/49.

Synthetic

-Muhle 21 mm silvertip fibre.

I would say those are the "essentials" to try or to have.

What would be yours?

Interesting questions...

Badgers- my experience is limited here. My only badger in used is a 22mm TGN Silver Tip set into a repurposed Parker synthetic handle

Boar- any Semogue, Omega Pro 49

Synthetic- not sure about this one either. I love the H.I.S, but also recognize that it is not ideal for everyone.

Boar
Semogue 620
Semogue 1438
Semogue 820
Semogue SOC Cherrywood

Really as many Semogues that you can afford Biggrin

Badger
TGN Super Badger in a handle of your choice. I prefer a 21mm Fan, but any of their Super Badger or Silvertip knots are good. I just cannot see spending the money on big name badgers when you can get a great knot for around $25.

Horse
Vie-Long Beehive

Edited my post. Though I think I'll have to eventually try a 620.

Not sure we should include out of production brushes on this list as, well, we can't get them anymore. Dodgy

No , not out of production brushes. If not , vintage Simpson and Plissons would be the "essential" ones , with Rooney finest.

I already have more than enough to be essential, so my short list would be wants.

Boar: None, I have all the boar I could ever want or need.

Badger: Simpsons, all best badger: Duke 3, Chubby 1, 2, and 3, Emperor 3, and a 57.

That's it as everything else is totally out of my price range.

Johnny :

the thread is about what brushes would you recommend to others as "essential brushes" to own or try.

So what brushes would you recommend ?

I don't know that it's even possible to make a list of brushes that are necessary to have. But in terms of badger brushes that I think everyone should try at least once (and I can't speak to boar or horse because I have never used them), I would have to list a Simpson Duke and a Chubby, a Manchurian, a vintage Plisson, a Shavemac silvertip, and a Morris & Forndran blonde.
