Who is on your basketball Mt. Rushmore and who shoots the last shot?
I could build a number of Mt. Rushmore's for this question, but here's my pick:
Bill Russell - center
Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman - forwards
Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson - guards
last shot: Bird

I would keep Bird and Jordan, but would add Shaq at center, Lebron at forward, and Kobe as a guard. Rodman was a freak rebounder, but he’s not near Lebron’s level as an all rounder. Last shot would go to Jordan.

My second team is all NY.

Frazier, Monroe, DeBusschere, Oakley. Center is a coin toss for me between Ewing and Reed.

Not saying they belong on Mt. Rushmore, but this squad gives me a helluva rush!

Point guard:  Magic
Shooting Guard:  Michael
Small forward:  Tandy Gillis*
Power forward:  Tim Duncan
Center:  Healthy** Bill Walton

* O.k., who?  Gillis never played in the NBA, and he never was a headliner in college.  He played for Pete Newell on the great University of California teams of 1959 and 1960.  Most small forwards make their mark as scorers.  Tandy Gillis was a one-trick pony:  he always was assigned to guard the opponent's top scorer, one-on-one, in a man defense, and (with very few exceptions) he outscored the player he was covering.  Among those he covered:  Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West.  That defines a man I want on my team.

** Bill Walton was injured for the majority of his pro career, but when he was healthy, he was nonpareil.

So now I'm thinking: offense and defense
My offensive team for last shot:
Jabbar
Bird
Lebron James
Jordan
Iverson

My defensive team to stop last shot:
Russell
Rodman
Magic
Jordan
Walt Frazier

I'm building my lineup for the modern NBA, and I'm willing to play some guys out of position. Everyone has to be able to shoot.
  • PG: Magic Johnson
  • SG: Steph Curry
  • SF: Michael Jordan
  • PF: Lebron James
  • C: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Last shot: Probably Jordan, but if we need a 3 I'm going with Steph Curry.

Consider this... is/has there been a more consistent (better?) defensive front line than Parish, McHale and Bird?

Jackson? On one hand he’s a tough call for Mt Rushmore because, just look at the talent he coached. My grandmother could have coached those teams and they’d have won. On the other hand, look at all the rings he has!

Two outstanding guards but I would replace Robertson with Pistol Pete Maravich.

I'm guessing the Mt. Rushmore bit means we're not actually building a team, so
Wilt Chamberlain front and foremost
Kareem
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Michael Jordan
Last shot...Bird
