In December 2018, we had a thread on Proraso acquiring Valobra.  In that thread, we discussed whether Valobra had a future now that it was owned by Proraso.

http://shavenook.com/showthread.php?tid=56305&highlight=valobra

Since then, there have been two develpments:

1.  In the latter part of 2019, a Chinese fund purchased a 30% interest in the company which owns Proraso.

2.  Valobra soaps appear to have essentially disappeared from the market.  I did a quick search, and the only vendor I found with any stock of Valobra is BullGoose.

I don't know if Valobra, a classic, iconic Italian soap, will survive as a brand and return.

Unfortunately I think the same thing will happen as when La Toja was sold to a group.

VSHOD Australia still has some stock left. I bought a few of their last pucks of Patchouly. The service was
excellent. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I will miss the brand. It was an excellent soap.

The unscented pucks were the first to sellout everywhere. I should have gone on a hoarding spree.

Damn.

Valobra also made Czech & Speake shaving soaps, so those might also be gone.

Very true. I spoke with Chris at Czech & Speake several months ago. Prior to the sale, they had a huge batch of soap made. So.. it may take 4 or 5 years for the stock to be depleted. That said, when it is gone, it will be gone.

I looked into Nuo Capital, and it is structured with separate subsidiaries in Milan, Luxembourg, and Hong Kong. If you look on Crunchbase, the lead investors on the other Nuo Capital deals in Italy all have names that sound Italian. So, it's probably not really accurate for press statements to characterize this as a Chinese firm buying Proraso.

It's also worth noting that they only bought a 30% stake. The Martelli family still retains control over the company. I'm sure Nuo Capital has influence, but we can only speculate about a connection to the Valobra deal and subsequent decision to wind down shaving soap production. That doesn't make a ton of sense to me. If they were only interested in other Valobra product lines (e.g. bath soap), they must not have paid much for it.

I love the performance of Valobra hard pucks.

I recall seeing a SOTD with a soap called Almost Valobra. Anyone have any experience with it? If so, it is comparable to Valobra hard pucks.

I’m down to one last jar of Valobra Unscented, 4 AOS Unscented pucks and 1 AOS sandalwood.

This is why when I find a product I like i buy multiples.

That's one of the things about wet shaving, something's discontinued every other day it seems. And it doesn't matter how good it is or how well it sales.  It appears.
