What do you do in between passes?

I once saw a shaving YouTuber who’d rinse & dry his face in between passes, which I always took as odd. Probably because I generally use soaps that can take a lot of water and do the opposite by re-wetting my face before applying more lather.

I rinse the razor, take a sip of coffee, and build the lather in the bowl a little bit if it needs it.

Generally, I am doing preshave oil before my first face lathering and sometimes I forget to do another application before the second pass. That was what my something else is, more preshave. Main thing I try to do after the first pass is done is to get all the stray whiskers off my face before using the brush again.

When I rinse my face after a pass, the subsequent lather layer becomes to thin and runny for my liking. So now I just lather up straight away and have at it!

After the first pass, I usually rinse (no dry). After the second pass, I usually just re-lather (no rinse). I know, weird.  Wink

My routine is

  1. Wash with soap
  2. Apply lather
  3. Shave, roughly in paint strokes down
  4. Clean with water
  5. Apply lather
  6. Shave, across the face
  7. Clean with water
  8. Apply lather
  9. Shave to buff out the last few spots if I missed some
Note that re-applyng lather sounds to me like using the lather you just used ;-)

I've always been a rinse & wet guy. Like you, Mike, I see it as an opportunity to add more water to the lather.

I just relather. If the lather is getting dry I can dip the tips of the brush in the sink to add water as needed. Usually it needs a dip or two, sometimes it doesn’t. I guess I see it as easier to add water than soap, although it isn’t difficult to add soap either. The only exception is when I’m shaving the winter beard clean off, too many stray whiskers both shaved and attached since most of my beard doesn’t see as much as a trim for 6 or 7 months before it gets the blade. I’ll rinse to better assess where needs the extra attention. I’m curious about the YouTuber if that’s his regular routine or something to facilitate videos? Sometimes the recording process doesn’t seem as nice without a few deviations from the norm “for the camera”.
