I love Merkur blades.

Seriously.

I recently purchased 50, and have used 3 of them. They’re excellent.

I normally just do 2 shaves per blade. So, I used the first blade twice and tossed it. It still felt great, so I did 3 shaves on each of the other 2. They were still going strong. I might try 4 shaves on the next one.

I also got a tuck of MedPreps. They’re the ones I use most of the time in my DE. Tried one, and wonderful shave, as usual. But, after 2 shaves, I knew it was time to toss. And, well, it wasn’t quite as nice as the Merkur.

54 bucks for 100 Merkur, 46 bucks for 100 MedPrep (although you can probably get them much cheaper if you look around). {US dollars}

They’re pretty sharp. Certainly sharp enough for me. Probably about the same as KAI, which I used about once a week until I ran out a few weeks ago. Not as sharp as Feather, but still…sharp enough for me. There probably is a chart somewhere that measures sharpness, but, for me, it’s what I feel and what I like that’s important. Scientific measurements and comparisons are interesting I suppose, but for our hobby, I believe it’s what you feel that is important.

Thickness? Not sure. They seem to last longer for me. More durable. Is that because they’re thicker? I don’t know. They feel like they might be a tiny bit thicker than MedPrep.

I’m an GEM shaver most of the time now, but I use the DE about twice a week. The GEM blades are definitely thicker.

I have no idea why so many folks don’t like Merkur. I know they’re expensive, but, hey, you and I know that we’re not wet shavers to save money. It’s a hobby, and it’s fascinating and fun. And, are they actually more expensive considering how many shaves you get?

Opinions of course vary. That’s why all the aspects of wet shaving are so interesting. And, we lucky on this forum to have so many informed and interesting gentlemen sharing their thoughts.

Shave on.

While I can't talk for anyone but me, I don't like Merkur blades because the ones I got as freebies when I bought Merkur razors didn't give nearly as good shaves as my other blades Smile

Very interesting. These blades were among the worst I have ever tried.

This could be the first review/post I have seen with favorable comments on the Merkur blades.

I vaguely recall buying a 5 pack of the blades and not impressed.  Guessing binned as none in my random blade collection.

I used to hate Merkur blades too. Then in 2019 I decided to try some blades I hated before and to my surprise Merkurs worked nicely for me. I still think there are better or just as good blades with better availability/price, but I wouldn't mind if Merkurs were the only blades I had.

Tuggy, rough shaves. These blades were not my cup of tea.

Based on my rough calculations, my thoughts on Merkur do not represent 100% of our participants.  Biggrin
