I'm pleased to announce that Paladin Shaving has agreed to produce TSN's eighth anniversary limited edition shaving brushes. Paladin made our third anniversary (2015) brushes (Butterscotch PK-47s) five years ago and also produced the Seven Samurai brushes commemorating Bullgoose Shaving's tenth anniversary last year.

This offering is going to be different than any TSN has previously hosted. I'll leave it to Ken to elaborate the details in due course. For now, here's a clue.

Is there a prize if we guess right? Barrel-shaped handle? Bay rum-scented badger hair?

I'm short on photos right now, but we'll post more as this project progresses.

Some of you may recall that last year's Samurai project was intertwined with a move by Cody and his wife Courtney from Oregon to Clark, Colorado (about 45 minutes north of Steamboat Springs) that involved Cody's part of the shop being relocated temporarily into our space in Kansas. Immediately after the conclusion of that offering, my wife (Pam) and I started what turned out to be a very long process of moving from our home in Overland Park, Kansas (and shop in nearby Stilwell) to Fort Collins, CO. We're still not quite finished with that one.

As I dimly recall, Phil first raised the possibility of our creating the 2020 (eighth anniversary) TSN LE brushes sometime last summer, but I couldn't begin to think about making a commitment that far ahead back then. We finally got our shop moved into temporary space in Loveland, CO early this past March and closed on the purchase of a house in Fort Collins about three weeks later. Due to COVID-19, we weren't able to reunite with any or our household belongings in storage in Kansas (since August of last year) until mid-May, but the shop was up and running. On April 2nd I texted Phil and asked if he was still interested in having us produce the 2020 TSN LE brushes. He said yes, and we started kicking around ideas, one of which that he suggested was a barrel shape.

I was intrigued by the idea, but had some reservations. I asked a friend in San Francisco what he thought about it. He came back with a photo of a butterscotch Hoffritz barrel-shaped brush in his collection. It won me over, and my friend kindly offered to send the brush to us for study. Before I got around to doing anything with it, however, I struck off on a tangent exploring variations on the Samurai design (which had resulted from combining elements of Cody's Lotus and our Buck Rogers for the Bullgoose tenth anniversary brush last year). On April 23rd, I turned the first prototype of what we ended up calling the Pirate.

I hadn't soured on the Barrel idea at all, but thought we should show Phil the Pirate before making a final decision. Then it occurred to me that pirates and barrels of rum go together. So, why not offer both? And that's what we decided to do. We've settled on offering 80 brushes in total: 40 Pirates and 40 XXXs, all 26 mm with semi-bulb knots in a choice of 21 materials for Pirates and 22 for XXXs (the 21 shown below plus Briar, which won't be available for Pirates). I'll post further details as we work them out.

Now, here are some photos (in chronological order).

Yeah, and I'm at least 10 years older than I was then. How the hell did that happen?!
