TSN Eighth Anniversary Limited Edition Shaving Brush Offering: Description and Instructions

First, these brushes are not being offered on a first-come, first-served basis (except for requests received after 8:00 PM Mountain Time on Sunday, September 20, assuming any brushes remain available at that stage). So, please take time to carefully read and thoroughly understand this post from top to bottom before submitting a request. It is important that everyone does that! There should be time.

If you have any questions, please ask them in this thread so we can answer them here for the benefit of everyone who might be interested. To that end, let’s maintain focus in this thread on Q&A. There's another thread already running at http://shavenook.com/showthread.php?tid=...#pid960869) that would serve well for general discussion, which I hope will carry forward.

These brushes have not been made yet. We are offering them on a pre-order basis with a $40 per brush, up-front, non-refundable payment required to secure orders.

Note that we can only ship brushes containing badger-hair knots to United States addresses.

Summary description of the brushes:

This year’s TSN LE shaving brushes will be produced by Paladin Shaving and include two handle designs: the very recently introduced Paladin Pirate and the brand-new Paladin XXX. Unfinished examples of each are shown in following photos.

26 mm Paladin Pirate (approximately 60 mm height x 41.5 mm outside diameter):

26 mm Paladin XXX (approximately 48 mm height x 43 mm outside diameter:

All handles will have our standard Paladin engraving on the front. Pirate handles in this offering will bear a skull and crossed-sabers engraving on their back sides, and the back side of XXXs will be engraved XXX. Each handle will also have an individually numbered (e.g., 1 of 40) bottom engraving.

All handles will have 26 mm sockets set with Paladin Select two-band, hand-tied, badger-hair 2CLNF7 knots, which were delivered to us in June. (If we could make better knots ourselves, we'd be doing it.) I've tried a couple of them, but we haven't sold any brushes with *F7 knots yet. Based on my use so far, I'd say *F7s fall somewhere between *L6s and *A7s. A bit less gel than the former and more gel than the latter. That's based on a very limited sampling, however; and mileage is bound to very. These are natural products, and there is inevitably variance within batches and orders as well as between them. In terms of size and density, these knots recall to my mind those we used for the Seven Samurai project last year. We think they match well with both handles. We plan to set them at lofts in the range of 53-53 mm.

Here's Pirate set with an *F7 knot that I just used.

The offering will be limited to 80 brushes in total comprising not more than 40 Pirates and 40 XXXs.

Pirate handles are being offered in 21 different materials as shown in the photos and list appearing under Handle Materials further below. Ivory and Butterscotch handles maybe requested with either polished or Satin finish.

XXX handles will be available in the same materials and finish options for Ivory and Butterscotch, plus Briar. (There will be no Briar Pirate handles made for this offering).

Brushes may be purchased separately or in sets (one Pirate and one XXX engraved with the same number). Note that sets will not be required to have matching handle materials (i.e., a set might include a Pirate with an Ebony handle and an XXX with a Briar handle).

Pricing:

Pirate with non-acrylic handle = $220 plus cost of shipping with insurance.
Pirate with acrylic handle = $235 plus cost of shipping with insurance.
XXX with non-acrylic handle = $210 plus cost of shipping with insurance.
XXX with acrylic handle = $225 plus cost of shipping with insurance.

$40 per brush will be invoiced in advance and must be paid promptly to secure an order.

Shipping:

We’ve used USPS Priority Mail exclusively since March 2016 and have been highly satisfied with the service with only a few exceptions. Since May, however, we’ve noticed some degradation, and we’re more than a little anxious about how the upcoming election and mail-in voting could adversely affect service levels. We may, therefore, decide to switch to UPS (more likely based on cost) or FedEx for this offering.

We have never factored shipping costs in pricing brushes we make. Based on the UPS pricing available to us, we will include $12.50 for shipping and insurance of orders for single brushes and add $2.50 for each additional brush in a combined order. If we end up using USPS Priority Mail, we’d reduce the $12.50 based charge to $10.00.

Shipping charges will be included in the final invoice.

How to submit a request to purchase one or more of the 2020 TSN LE shaving brushes:

1. Send an email addressed to paladinshaving@darkholler.com with 2020 TSN LE in the subject header and nothing else (please!). We will sort and label emails based on the subject header.
2. Be sure to send your email from an account we can reply to.
3. State how many brushes you wish to buy in total.
4. Confirm that you have a US address or a forwarder with a US address to which we can send
5. If you are a member or TSN, include your TSN username.
6. State whether you have previously purchased a Paladin shaving brush directly from us. If you have, it’s helpful for us to know in creating an invoice.
7. List each requested brush and/or set on a separate line in order of priority. If you are requesting a single brush on any line, state both the handle style (i.e., Pirate or XXX) and material, and if you are requesting a set on any line, be sure to state which material you want for the Pirate and which for the XXX (e.g., set: Ebony Pirate and Briar XXX).
8. Be sure you have settled on what you want before submitting an order request. No change-orders, please!
9. Please do not include any additional non-critical information, requests (e.g., placement of engravings, number, loft), or photos.

Brush allocation process:

I plan to insert the instructions section above at about 8:00 AM Mountain Time on Sunday, September 20. Any requests submitted prior to that time will not accepted as valid. The initial window for submission of requests will run from 8:00 AM Mountain Time on Sunday, September 20 until 8:00 PM that night. Requests may be submitted after 8:00 PM Mountain Time on Sunday, September 20; however, valid requests we receive prior to that time will be given priority.

On Monday (unless we decide to start on Sunday night after 8:00 PM Mountain Time), we’ll conduct a partial first-round drawing to select eight requests for sets. So, only requests that describe a set as the submitter’s first (or sole) choice will be included at that stage. After we’ve drawn eight set requests, we’ll proceed to draw both single brushes and sets, one brush or set at a time, from the remaining requests until we’ve either 1) gone through all of the requests or 2) all 80 brushes have been assigned to a request.

If any brushes remain unassigned after we’ve completed the first round drawing, we’ll repeat the process until either 1) all requests received prior to 8:00 PM on Sunday, including those for multiple sets, separates, or any combination of sets and separate brushes, have been granted (subject to payment of subsequent order invoice) or 2) all 80 brushes have been assigned to a request.

If any brushes remain unassigned to a request after completing the process described above, those that remain will be assigned on a first-come, first served based to valid requests received after 8:00 PM Sunday night.

Notification of results and invoicing:

We will notify all participants of the results as pertaining their respective requests and issue invoices for required pre-payments accordingly. It is very important that we keep this project on track for the sake of efficient and timely administration and production. Invoices must be paid within twenty-four (24) hours of issuance or we may offer the brush to someone else.

Once your brush is made and ready to ship, we will send you an invoice (via email) for the balance due (including shipping and insurance charges), payment of which will complete your purchase. Please only place an order if you are certain you’ll be able to pay for it.

Caveats:

1. Production starts with turning handles in our shop in Fort Collins, Colorado. The handles are then sent to Cody in Clark, CO, where he hand-finishes and engraves them. After that they go back to Fort Collins for knots, photographs, and order fulfillment. The cycle takes a few weeks minimally. We hope to have these brushes made and ready to ship within about a 4-6 weeks (sooner, hopefully, if possible) from their respective order dates, but we’re not in control of everything that can bear on that happening. If we encounter any significant delay, we’ll communicate promptly with customers holding affected orders.

2. Please take this into consideration when selecting a material with high variability in pattern (e.g., Disco). If you tend to be very picky about that sort of thing, we completely understand, but such a material might not turn out to be the best choice for you in this offering. Please study examples on our website (linked below under Handle Materials) before making your selection(s).

Honor System:

In order to maintain fairness to all, please do not submit a request for an brush(es) unless you are certain of your willingness and ability to purchase it in accordance with the instructions and process described above.

Returns:

These brushes will be made to order. No returns will be accepted except in cases of material defect in materials or workmanship.

Handle materials:

The photos below include examples of workpieces made from each of the 21 materials that may be requested for Pirates and/or XXXs. Briar is also being offered for XXXs (but not Pirates). Names of the materials  are listed further below (under the photos) along with links to filtered collections of corresponding examples on our website (note there might be more than one page of examples).

Will the engraving color be gray on the Lapis Lazuli brushes or the standard gold lettering?

Under "How to submit a request to purchase".

Sorry for the long post, but the range of choice makes this a complex offering to administer. One reason for not doing first-come-first-serve was to give everyone ample time to carefully read and understand the details (choices, process, etc.).

Got it.  Thanks Ken!
You might consider changing the color of the ordering email and header?

FYI, we're getting some expressions of interest in buying a brush. I think that's usually just polite usage, but it's a little indefinite. In order for this to be a fair process, requests need to be definite.

I’d be very interested to see what proportion of colors that were ordered, eventually.  Just curious.
Do you seem to be getting more orders for Pirate or XXX handles?
