I've never had an 8k stone. I would believe this would be the next step though if you wanted a finer polish. I would say most users find 8k to be the beginning of "shave ready". This Jnat would be a finishing stone. Once a shave ready edge is starting to tug, I use this stone to bring it back to life. I've kept edges going like this for years. Never needed to go to a lower grit.
