I've picked up three (two Fat Boys and one Slim) from fleabay, from 3 different sellers, and when I checked the blade gaps, all three had bent safety bars.  I checked them with blade-type feeler gauges.  Two had a tighter gap on one end of the razor and a wider cap on the opposite end.  This "bent bar" was true on both sides.  One of the three razors was so far off that it was obvious from a casual glance.  None were even.  In all 3 cases, I used Chappy's "Butter Knife Trick" and evened up the blade gaps to make them usable.  None of the three are "spot on" the factory specs, but now they're all quite usable (a tad milder than the factory specs, as it turns out).  After "tuning" I get my most satisfying shave on setting #6 on all three razors.

When you buy a Gillette Adjustable, do YOU check the blade gap with feeler gauges like I do?

Yes and I only check them at setting 1.  Glad the butter knife worked!  Biggrin
