This caught my eye while surfing this morning, but the items were not surprising to me. I only indulge in these things infrequently. I think the pair of glasses I have is on its 2nd or 3rd set of lenses. It is actually considerably cheaper to use contact lenses (the 30 day disposable type for me), but I need a back-up.

I not only dislike the markup for spectacle frames but many of the styles, as well. I simply take an old pair of glasses to my optometrist and have him replace the lenses when that is needed.

Frames are one aspect ...if you only knew the mark-up on lenses you would scream..I was in the Optometric business for 36 years and I could start a riot..but I,ll just go throw up now instead.DodgyHuhDodgy

Same quality lenses and frames can be had for a fraction of the price at Costco. Just goes to show....

But seriously, a 100% markup is normal for retail.

Low markups such as the 25% or whatever it is that Costco strives to achieve is exceedingly rare.

Even at those prices Cosco is making lot,s of money...however if you take in consideration the service, warranty and RX changes they are quite fair and possibly a decent alternative for average situations. Some people shop there and others at high end boutiques...kind of like with watches, designer clothes and cars...each to their own.

I have been using the same two pair of frames for the past 15 years. I have good vision insurance so my only out of pocket money is my $25.00 copay for my bifocal lenses.
