My understanding is that C&S reformulated its soap and the new formula does not have tallow.  This could be a case of the website not being updated to reflect the new ingredients.

Let us know what you get.  There is a distinct color difference between the old and new soaps.   The new non tallow soaps do not lather well.

There was quite the stink some time ago about this- my memory grows shorter all the time, but seems there was even some mis-labelled soap made available

It is true that the non-tallow soap did not lather well, I’m using one in the shower.

The reason that I posted and ordered is that C&S pulled the non-lathering 90g refill from the site, so I am hopeful that this is No 88 v3. Time will tell, fingers crossed.

There was indeed! C&S sent me 60 soaps mis-labeled with the old ingredients. They had no idea the soaps were reformulated. I'd steer clear of these.

*Edit* The ingredients listed are not the original formula. Is this a third formulation?

I happen to call their office in UK last month and the lady who answered the phone confirmed that the old manufacturer has taken retirement of sorts and there is someone new who is doing their soaps. Apparently, these guys don't know for themselves what's cooking.

I have to laugh Jags, you’re right as evidenced by the v2 product.

Usually I can lather a soap with my hands, even an olive oil Marseilles soap though the lather is not stable. C&S 88 v2 will not lather by any means. It’s quite a good bath soap, but not at shaving soap prices.

What I don't understand is why would the owner not test the soap himself before the release? Maker at least???

Given that the v2 ingredients were incorrect on the box, I’m sure that there’s a story behind it. My guess is the story amounts to that old saying ‘The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.’ But who knows.

Lol, don’t bother, it’s the same dud soap as v2, airy lather that dissipates on the face, same color/plasticky appearance. I suspect that they just corrected the box ingredients since they could probably be fined for incorrect ingredients. The box does now say ‘Made in England’.

So I have another bath soap, which is OK except that it costs too much for a bath soap. They make a bath gel that’s not unreasonably priced for C&S, but gels are not ideal for travel. Otherwise the shaving soap is fine in the shower and it lasts a long time because it’s basically insoluble in water.

I think that they fixed the box, not the soap.

Thanks for the update.  Your findings are what I expected and reflect my own experience with the reformulated soap.

I expected this as well. Who knows what the actual ingredients are.

I've more money than sense you will say, but the soap and the aluminium container, large,  intrigued me. So splashed out. The soap is HOPELESS  . The lady I e mailed will inform the maker. However, I grated it and mixed it with some white Proraso. Very nice indeed.
I love the container. Very well made, high quality. I've been using it as a lathering bowl and it works very well, although ideally it could be a bit larger.
Write to the company about their useless soap. They might look for a new maker.

They are well aware of their useless soap (or should be) after my customers complained after label gate. Unfortunately, they probably have 50,000 of these useless pucks to go through before they even consider a new maker.
