One of the many benefits of living in South Florida is the availability of fresh seafood.  Fishing is a huge sport here.  For those who don't have an interest in catching their own, there are numerous places to buy seafood just off the fishing boats.

The Florida Keys are home to the Florida Lobster.  The lobster fishing season runs from August 6 to March 31.  There is also a two-day mini season the last Wednesday and Thursday in July.

Lobster fishing is highly regulated.  Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers are law enforcement officers.  They patrol the waters and have the authority to stop and board any boat at will to inspect what fish is onboard.  Possessing a lobster out of season will definitely get you arrested.  Possessing an undersized lobster will either get you arrested or an expensive citation, depending on the circumstances and the officer.

Yesterday, our Labor Day cooking featured the usual grilled hot dogs.  However, a friend brought over some Florida Lobster he caught freediving in the Florida Keys.  Grilled hot dogs are not steak but we decided our meal qualified as a surf and turf.

Ricardo, I thought lobsters were cold water creatures. Did not know they like warmer waters. Hot dogs on the other hand, live everywhere the sun shines Biggrin

Charlie, there are various species of lobster, with some being from cold water and some from warm water.   Cold water lobsters, like Maine lobsters, have claws and you eat the meat from the claws and the tail.  Warm water lobsters, like Florida lobsters, do not have claws and you eat the meat from the tail.
