A practical idea? The shaving coat

Dear Shaving-Aficionados:

Was just browsing through a bunch of old 'GQ' ('Gentlemen's Quarterly') magazines and came across the advertisement below (in: Vol. 28, Iss. 8, Dec. 1958, p.34).

Is any of you, gentlemen, actually using a shaving coat today (besides your bold and wild chest hair, of course)?

It looks like a bathrobe with buttons, and seems intended for those who shave after a shower.   I shave after my morning work out and before a shower.  I take my shirt off and shave in the exercise shorts I'm wearing.  No need for a shaving coat or bathrobe to shave in.

You nailed it, Ricardo; a bathrobe with buttons! It’s a great post-war marketing concept for the mid century modest shaver. A little luxury at a reasonable price point. Wouldn’t work for me though. I manage to get lather all over my lower neck area and would make a mess of this in a jiffy. Something else to put in the washing machine.

I shave all the way down to my collarbones, which are covered by this coat (or a robe). I’d end up having to wash it after each shave due to getting so much soap on the lapels - so it’d be a no-go for me.

No, I'm a "bold and wild chest hair" kind of guy.  

Post shower shaver here.  No duds worn till the shave is done.  I haven't owned anything resembling a robe since...I think maybe 1982.

It seems that capitalism works! The shaving coat takes its place next to the smoking jacket and fez.
